How to Plan a Birthday Party for Christmas Babies of Any Age

Mike Bauman
People with December birthdays often find their special holiday over-shadowed by, or combined with, Christmas. For those of us who love these people, there are additional challenges associated with planning a birthday party in December. It is very difficult to find an open weekend after Thanksgiving with all the holiday parties and other activities. What follows are some ideas to ensure their special day remains theirs.

Decorate at least one room in your house with absolutely no Christmas decorations. This room is to remain the special domain of birthday decorations. While completely symbolic, this gesture shows consideration and priority specifically for the birthday girl/boy.

Birthday presents NEVER wind up under the tree. It is imperative to keep everything birthday separate from everything Christmas. This includes wrapping paper, bows, and cards.

Consider planning a party either early, perhaps in mid-November, or late, after the first of the year. An early party has the advantage of ensuring your loved one does not have to wait to receive their presents. The later date has the advantage of allowing you to give your birthday girl/boy an invitation to their party as a Christmas present.

Whenever you have your party make sure there are no reminders of Christmas. Do not exchange gifts with other people. Make the day about the birthday.

Consider half birthdays. While you lose some of the magic of the special day, you gain a much more open calendar and don't have to worry about changing decorations. Also, you will typically have better weather in June than you will have in December.

With a little planning and imagination, it is possible to make birthdays near the Christmas holiday special and focused.
