How to Plan an Efficient Home Office

Working from Home Can Be Done If You Do it Right

No one needs to tell you that the economy has taken a turn for the worse. Because of this many people are finding their niche in working from home. Working from home has many good points. There is no need to travel, and you can get up when you want. You can even work in your pajamas if you wish. Sounds great doesn't it? Yes, but this is not always the best formula for success.

It takes a committed person to pull off the work from home concept. You must be committed and be able to set day to day at home events aside. If you are working from your kitchen table this may prove to be difficult. With the television on and family members passing through the room, the interruptions are endless. We all know how hard it is to get back to where you were when you were interrupted.

With commitment, and cooperation from other family members, you can work from home successfully. Rise every day at the same time. Dress and prepare for work just as if you are leaving the home. Schedule your daily work time and stick with it.

If working from home is your plan, it is imperative that you set aside a room in your home for a working office. You can do this in a bedroom, or any available space that will provide a quiet environment where you can work uninterrupted. Remove the televisions or anything that will distract you from your work.

Comfort is just as important as solitude when working from home. Select a desk that will meet all of your needs and fit well into your space. Office Max has a great selection of desks at reasonable prices. If you are using a PC, this RS To-Go Dawson 60" computer desk is a great desk, providing a place for the computer as well as drawers for supplies and a file drawer.

If you prefer a work station, Office Max carries a great wood toned work center, the RS To-Go Empire Computer Desk with Hutch for about $250. This is a great space saver. It provides space for your computer, files and also has desktop and overhead storage. Consider computer and telephone hook up when placing your desk. If you choose wireless connections this will not be a necessary consideration.

A good, comfortable chair makes more difference than many of us realize. If you splurge on anything, it should be your chair. If you are 6 feet tall, you don't want a low backed chair, and if you are short you will not want a large seat. There are many chairs available with lumbar support. A great choice is the Ergo Mesh High-Back Executive Chair from Overstock.com.This chair has received many great reviews and is similar to the Herman Miller with its European contemporary style for about half the price. It has a mesh fabric back that allows for circulation and comfort. Be sure to provide comfortable seating for clients or guests as well.

A good computer is key for most office functions. Do not try to cut corners with your computer. Determine what functions you will be performing in your business. Meet with a computer specialist who can help determine what your needs will be. There are many programs available that will assist you in your business. Review carefully before making a purchase. It is better to take your time than to buy an expensive program only to find that it does not do everything you needed it to do.

Plan your office in a space with plenty of natural light and fresh air if possible. Be sure there is ample heat in the room as well. One of my favorite additions to my home office is the Chimney Free 18" Mahogany Fireplace from Lowe's. For just under $400, this provides heat and a cozy ambiance in the winter months.

A good work table and ample file cabinets are a necessary part of many office functions. Organization is important and will allow you to work more efficiently. Plan a filing system and stick with it. You will always be able to locate that document if you are consistent with your filing system.

Set a schedule and follow it. Schedule your breaks and take them out of the office. Return to the office at the scheduled time. Commitment is the key to success. You have the power to make your own rules but it is up to you to follow them.
