A properly planned grocery list is a powerful thing. Having a well thought out plan of action will save you time, frustration, and money. Most people attempt to have a grocery list. Most people are guilty of making a poor grocery list. Random items are slopped on ragged pieces of paper only to be abandoned at the store or forgotten about altogether.

Have you been to Wal-Mart or Safeway on a Friday evening? If not, you may not understand the value of properly planning and executing a grocery list. If you have survived this horrible event you should make sure it never happens to you or your loved ones again!

Planning a grocery list can seem a bit tedious in the beginning. I must admit, there are a lot of factors to consider before rushing to your local market. With time and planning, you will be able to breeze through those store aisles with ease.

You should plan to buy food to cover a specific period of time. I usually buy groceries to last for an entire month. While it is not necessary to plan each meal to the pinch of salt, it is necessary to have a realistic needs assessment. I find it helpful to make a list of meals I want to eat during the month. Your list can be as detailed as you like.

Grocery list planning is a continual effort that begins once your groceries arrive at your front door. Your goal should be to get the most value from the minimal amount of store trips. The techniques listed below relate to buying groceries for regular pantry stocking. You should keep a continual list of needed items during the planning period. This list will be refined until it is time for shopping completion.

Consider health needs and dietary restrictions. You need to purchase items that will be beneficial to every member of your household. Keep this important factor in mind throughout the list planning process. This is a great time to plan for healthier eating for your family. Write down items you would like to try as well as items that are usually in rotation.

Complete a visual inspection. Do not rely on your memory! You should inspect all food storage areas to note items that are low or depleted. Write down items you wish to purchase. Make a mental note of what is already in stock. Consider these items when calculating your needs.

Make a budget. Once you have completed the above steps, you will be able to begin to make a budget. Be realistic in your budget making.

Find coupons and rebates. You may be surprised at how much money can be saved with the simple snip of a coupon or swipe of a store loyalty card! Once I saved $86 dollars at the register with a combination of coupons and store specials. Remember to buy items that you need. Coupons only save money when they are used properly.

Choose a store. You should make this selection based on several criteria. Consider store pricing, crowdedness, selection, and proximity to your home. Subscribe to store emails to receive the latest sales and promotions. This will also assist in choosing which store to shop.

Refine your grocery list. This is the time to combine all of your data! Compile a comprehensive list of needed items based on your thorough assessments. Typing your list will make it much easier to read and manage. It may also be helpful to organize your list into sections. I divide my list into the food groups. Once you know the store layout, you can refine the list even further.

Head to the store. Choose a suitable day and time to go to the store. The grocery store is usually less crowded in the early mornings. Never go to the store when you are hungry or sleepy. Take special care to bring all of your grocery shopping materials! Gather your grocery list, coupons, and a pen. These materials can be easily transported in a coupon organizer. Make sure you have enough room in your vehicle to safely transport your groceries.

Once your shopping trip is completed, keep the receipt. This will help you see how much money you actually spent. It will also help in your grocery planning for the next trip. You may even want to frame it!
