Start with a killer invitation to draw them in. Check out the web-site for party 411 for some fabulous custom invitations you can order. You can also create your own, look for cardstock with champagne bottles, confetti, or balloons. If you have a specific theme look for clip art or cardstock with that theme to use with your invitations. Type out your message, and let your guests know how much fun they are going to have at your party! Be sure to let them know if they are supposed to bring their own beverages, or a snack to share. Also let them know if it is an adult only party, or if children are welcome.
You can keep some of your Christmas decorations up, and decorate with a winter theme. White lights work great for both Christmas and New Year's decorations. You can also go with a silver and gold decorating theme. Purchase silver and gold balloons, and streamers to place around the house. The more streamers and decorations you have the more festive the room will look. You want to set the mood for the party as soon as the guests walk into the room. You can have a theme for your party such as a luau, or costume party. Have your guests wear costumes or masks.
Some great ideas for New Year's Eve party games include:
A trivia game where you read an event which took place during the last year and the guests have to tell you what month the event occurred in. Your events can be local if all the guests are from your area, or they can be national and world events. You can also use celebrity news events, movie releases, song or album releases as the theme.
Have the guests write their New Year's resolutions on a piece of paper. These can be serious or funny. The guests can divide into teams and play guess my resolution.
For music play fun songs that have been popular over the years, and have the guests try to figure out what year the song came out. Don't forget to have a copy of Auld Lang Syne available to play at midnight.
When planning your New Year's Eve party food keep it simple. Go for snacks, and finger foods, not a sit down dinner. Some good suggestions include chicken wings, bite size eggrolls, nachos and salsa, vegetables, or fruit with dip, and fortune cookies. Your guests will want to mingle and snack, not sit down and feast. You don't need a fancy bar, stock beer, some wine, and a few basic mixers. Be sure you have some champagne on hand for the New Year's Celebration!
Don't forget to have hats, noisemakers, horns, and confetti on hand for when the clock strikes midnight. You can create your own by using a funnel to fill balloons with confetti. Just relax and have fun with it. Enjoy the night, and Happy New Year!
