How to Plan a Family Indoor Picnic

A picnic is typically defined and perceived as a fun outdoor excursion that has a meal or food associated with it. There is really no reason to think that a picnic needs to be confined to the outdoors nor tied to an excursion. A family that has a sense of imagination, a desire for fun and a willingness to be a little different, will enjoy planning a family indoor picnic. With a little planning a family indoor picnic may become a family tradition. A few things to think about are just how much the indoor picnic will be like an outdoor picnic.

How to Plan a Family Indoor Picnic: Location of the Picnic

One of the first things a family has to decide, when planning an indoor picnic, is where will it be held? Typical outdoor picnics are held in parks, in the woods, on mountain sides and many more options. An indoor picnic might be fun to host in the family room, in the basement or in one of the kids bedrooms. It can still be held in whatever room the family typically eats in too. If it is to be held in the traditional room for eating, maybe the table could have paper plates and napkins, plastic silverware and a red and white checkered table cloth.

How to Plan a Family Indoor Picnic: Foods for the Picnic

It seems like one of the traditional foods eaten at a picnic is fried chicken with all of the fixings. What you eat at your indoor picnic is totally up to you. If you have a home with a fireplace, you may be able to cook hot dogs on a stick and roast marshmallows. You may want to have a family potluck picnic with each family member bringing a dish. A family potluck picnic may take a little time and effort, but with good planning, this could be a very fun way to have a delicious meal and will give the kids an opportunity to test their culinary skills.

How to Plan a Family Indoor Picnic: Furniture for the Picnic

Picnics are generally held sitting around a picnic table, if you hold an outdoor picnic at a park. If you take a picnic into the woods or other outdoor site, a blanket is usually used to spread on the ground to sit on while eating. Deciding what your family will sit on during your indoor picnic may be as simple as spreading a blanket on the floor in the location you have decided to hold the picnic. You might also think about setting up some card tables to sit on just to make it different than a regular meal.

How to Plan a Family Indoor Picnic: Games for the Picnic

A fun outdoor picnic includes not only good food, but also playing and games. Some outdoor parks have lots of play equipment kids can play on. There are walking trains, swimming pools, volley ball courts and more. It seems like most of the outdoor picnic activities are fun and physical. Keeping this in mind, are there some physical activities that can go along with your indoor picnic? Sure there are! Maybe you could set up an indoor obstacle course and have family members test their strength and endurance on a course of pull ups in one room, sit ups in another and doing jumping jacks when moving from room to room and activity to activity.

Planning an indoor picnic is a fun family activity that may just turn into a monthly occurrence.
