How to Plan an Inexpensive Theme Birthday Party for Young Children

A Little Imagination Can Help Your Party Dollars Go a Long Way

As if planning a birthday party for the preschool set isn't hard enough-time, budget constraints and limited ideas often make what should be a fun process difficult and stressful. However, with a little imagination and a few basic steps, planning an inexpensive birthday party for young children can be both fun and cost-effective.

Make a Budget
Sounds simple enough, right? After all, planning and throwing your own birthday party has to be less expensive than paying for a party package somewhere else. Wrong. Oftentimes, parties thrown at home become more costly just because parents fail to make - and adhere to-a budget. So decide what you want to spend, and stick to your plan.

Pick a Theme
Not sure how you can compete with the Rocket Blaster themed birthday party that little Timmy had-complete with coordinating napkins, table cloth, and birthday cake? Don't worry, not all birthday parties have to revolve around the latest and greatest tv characters and their overpriced birthday party accessories. Does your daughter like dolls? Then have a doll-themed party. Is your son's favorite color blue? Plan a blue party! If you still can't decide what theme to use, ask your child. Allowing your child to contribute ideas offers him a wonderful opportunity to feel needed, and you the chance to gain a new perspective on his likes and dislikes. However, if all else fails, feel free to use some of these ideas:

• Tea party
• Fireman
• Policeman
• Costume Party
• Picnic
• Dress-up

Prioritize
Hooray! Now all you have to do is implement your theme without emptying your wallet. Start by prioritizing. Make a list of must-haves you are unwilling to eliminate from your party. Is it imperative that you buy the birthday cake at the local bakery? Does your child insist that you invite all 25 preschool classmates? Don't panic. Just make sure that your must-have list isn't too long, or you will have defeated your purpose. After all, planning an inexpensive birthday party for children is what motivated you to make the list in the first place.

Pick a Location
This is a very important step, as it could play an important part in your budget. Home is the obvious first choice as an inexpensive location, but it does have drawbacks. And, depending on the number of guests, it may prove to be too small of a venue for your affair. If this is the case, there are a number of inexpensive (and free!) locations that would be great for a party.

Local Park or Playground
These often have kid-friendly play equipment as well as pavilions or picnic tables. Be sure to have a friend or family member arrive early to claim your spot. Or call the local parks and recreation department to reserve a time.

Club House
If you're lucky enough to live in a housing development or apartment complex that has a club house, then this offers a great place to host a party without the stress of doing it too far from home. In addition, these are often free or reasonably priced to residents.

Local Fire Department or Police Station
Often, local fire departments and police stations will provide free tours for groups of children. Children will be in awe of the uniforms and vehicles, while providing you the opportunity to enjoy the party along with your children. Do plan, however, on continuing the party at an alternative location once the tour is over.

Church or Synagogue
Contact the office to find out details on hosting parties on-site. Many times, churches and synagogues have special rooms set up exclusively for events such as these.

Plan Your Details
Let your creativity shine here, as this can be the most fun part of planning an inexpensive party for children. With your theme and location chosen, all you have to do is plan the details. How do you plan on carrying your theme throughout the party? For example, if you decide on a fireman theme, attending a tour of the local fire department is one way to carry the theme throughout the party. However, remember that less is sometimes more. So while you may decide to have a fireman cake, it's not necessary to get fireman plates, napkins and balloons. Simple red paper plates and napkins will carry the theme with color, while keeping costs down.

Let the Kids Help
What are the children going to do once the party starts? If your party doesn't involve a tour, then you're left entertaining the birthday munchkins for the duration. Use this as opportunity to have the children work for you! Let the children make their own party favors. For example, if you decide on a tea party theme, buy inexpensive cups and provide the children with materials to decorate them with. If you decide on a policeman-themed party, cut out cardboard stars and let the children decorate them with silver paint. When dry, they can write their names on them. In the end the children will have wonderful mementoes of the party, while you have the peace of mind that comes from knowing your guests are entertained.

Go Shopping in Unexpected Places
Before you go shopping, it is imperative that you make a list of things you will need. This way, you won't buy anything (or as much) impulsively and blow your budget. If you plan on making invitations, for example, write down what materials you will need. Stick to your list and your budget will remain intact.

But where do you go? As popular and convenient as they may be, steer clear of party supply stores. Oftentimes, simple accessories such as paper plates and plastic forks can be almost twice as much. Instead, head to your local discount stores for these materials. Looking for party favors or fireman hats? Various dollar stores have a large selection of inexpensive toys and party favors. Did you decide on having a "purple" party? Local thrift stores will often carry old clothes, hats, and other miscellaneous supplies that, with a little imagination, can make wonderful additions to your theme.

Enjoy the Party!
The theme is set, the guests invited, and the location decorated. Now it's to watch as your child enjoys his day. Relax, take pictures, and remember that-while planning an inexpensive birthday party may mean pinching pennies-it isn't short on imagination or love. Now go enjoy your party!
