How to Plan a Rent Party

Nicole A.
The total amount of your monthly rent is a good start when choosing an end goal to meet. Rent parties can be fun depending on how you set these events up but should be focused on building funds, not draining them. Setting a fundraising goal for your rent party is an important task that must not be overlooked. Collect enough to cover your rental fees plus any money that was spent to plan and host a rent party in the first place. Tally up all of the money generated after all guests have left the party. If you are short, try to borrow the rest, work last minute side jobs that pay cash or host another rent party.

Choose between a Public and Private Rent Party
The right amount of attendees can help you meet a fundraising goal quickly. This all depends on who you invite and how many actually show up. Determine whether or not you will invite the public when choosing to plan a rent party. Private affairs make it easier to host an event without being concerned with rental lease restrictions and safety issues. A private rent party may still have be planned strategically because raising money will be limited to the amount of people you know.

Public parties allow both friends and strangers to bring their friends, relatives, friends of friends and other people of interest including co-workers. The chances for meeting for fundraising goal increase with a public party. As your potential for money heightens, so does the risk of property damage, liability for illegal or immoral activities and trouble with your landlord.

Determine the Course of Action to Make ends Meet
Will you pass around a hat to collect donations, sell tickets, charge admission at the door, or setup a donation table? The answer to this question is very important during the initial planning stages of a rent party. You can choose one way to raise money or combine these methods to meet your fundraising goal. Selecting one guaranteed way to get the funds needed may be better than hoping for large donations. By charging admission or selling tickets, you can determine the exact amount of people needed to meet a fundraising goal. Collecting donations throughout the party is one way to maintain a laid back atmosphere but does not ensure large returns.

Send out Invitations or Fliers
Tell as many people as possible about your event when starting to plan a rent party. If the social gathering is private, make invitations using stationery around your house or buy cheap invitations from a dollar store. Post fliers at local retail stores, colleges and adjacent apartment buildings or homes to advertise your rent party. Displaying the terms rent or fundraising is not necessary, especially if you want to keep your financial situation confidential. Come up with catchy last-minute party themes or take advantage of a nearby holiday of the week or month.

I've heard of these, but have never thrown or gone to one. Kind of a desperate ploy, IMO. Wish I had friends that would have donated at a rent party back in the day, but they were all struggling as well.
