How to Plan for a Road Trip

No matter the weather, the season or the gas prices, a road trip can be one of the most wonderful experiences that you can have with your family. You simply need to be sure that when you plan your road trip, you have all of every little detail taken care. Vacations like road trips can be very stressful for the person who is in charge of planning all of the little details, however. Here are a few tips to make your next road trip or family vacation a great one.

Don't over plan. When you're looking at the map, don't assume that you or your friends (or family members) can drive twelve hours a day. While it may be possible to drive that long (or even longer in some cases), at that point what you're planning isn't a road trip, it's a race to get somewhere. At the most, you'll want to drive between eight and nine hours daily, leaving time for sight seeing, bathroom breaks, and food stops. You may not realize it before you head out the first morning, but driving can be an exhausting chore. Leave yourselves time to relax at the end of the day and if your vacation is long enough, plan for days when you won't be driving at all.

Explore your surroundings. Will you be passing by any significant cities during your road trip? Stop and explore them, if you have the chance. Chances are, you will not regret it. Even if you'll be 30 miles or so outside of town, you may have the chance to see some incredible sites on the way to your ultimate destination. Don't miss out on seeing things along the way that may have cultural or historical significance to the surrounding state or even to the entire country. If you have your children along with you in your vacation, it will give them (and you) a chance to stretch their feet, and stretch their brains. Take extra pains to check out these surrounding areas along your route before you leave so that you have a bit of background and leave yourself enough leeway to branch from your main route to see these landmarks.

Plan for the weather. Just because it is snowing in Vermont, doesn't mean that it's snowing everywhere else in the country. If your destination is Southern Florida, pack accordingly before you leave, but don't assume anything. Vacations can be deceptive that way. Check the weather at every one of your destinations for two weeks before you embark on your trip. If possible, check what the weather was last year at your destinations and what the average is for the time of year that you plan to go. If you are adequately prepared for each place that you plan on visiting, it will be much easier to enjoy each separate destination.

Be flexible. Every veteran road tripper knows that something will inevitably go wrong when you are on your trip. Plan accordingly and just know that something will probably happen that diverts you from your original plans temporarily. This is just a vacation fact that you need to be aware of if you hadn't yet considered it. Along the same lines, make sure that you know where hospitals are along the way. If somebody gets terribly sick suddenly, you won't want to have to search for the nearest emergency care center. Have it taken care of before you leave so that no matter where you are while on vacation, you'll know exactly how to take care of an emergency if such a situation arises.

The bottom line is that as long as you plan for the worst and hope for the best, you won't be surprised at anything that happens along the way. Road trips will bring you and your friends or family closer, so good luck and have fun!

This is perfect information from keeping a road trip from becoming, as you said, a race to another destination. Everyone should calm down about vacations and driving and read this article.
