This can be your family or best friends. Decide who is willing to invest money and take the time off needed to make this road trip happen. Also a good thing would be to have people that can actually help drive or be able to change a tire or fix a vehicle or that is prepared for any kind of emergency.
Money
This is the biggest obstacle on what you will do or where you will go. Make a pot and come up with what you can actually contribute to this road trip then have everyone else who is going add to this pot also. Once all the money is in the pot you can then proceed to time & location. Always remind who ever going to have spending money of their own this pot is for Transportation and Housing once there.
Time & Location
Time will probably be your most difficult thing to overcome. Most people have jobs and most require at least one month to two weeks' notice ahead of time before even requesting time off. The more people you have coming on this road trip the more of a difficult task this will be. Once you make time, where will you go. You always have to keep factors in mind such as how much money it will cost for gas, vehicle maintenance, food or even emergencies.
Transportation
Who's vehicle will you use? Is the vehicle reliable? Will it be able to have all people sit comfortable? Do all the seat belts work? Many people usually rent a vehicle so they do not have to put miles on their own vehicles. Taken a long road trip can put many bad miles on your engine of your vehicle.
Food & Snacks
Fast Food can be very expensive try to save on your budget by bringing a few ice chest in the trunk packed with ice and snacks. The best solution is to buy in bulk and save money.
Road Trip Details
Know exactly where you are going and how you are getting there. Once there know what you are going to do and for how long you are going to do it for. Always let everyone know the exact road trip details so no one is confused and gets lost. Use online services such as Google or Yahoo Maps. This way you have exact driving directions for getting there and returning.
Safety Plans
Always have a backup plan and travel with a first aid safety kit these are not expensive at all and will come in great use if something happens. Keep a list of Emergency Contact numbers of all people's families in case something happens on the road trip. Most of all just be safe take your time and have fun.
