One thing that people don't realize is that you can not plan a book tour all at once like celebrities do for their albums or movies. The basic idea is to get everyone talking about your book and to keep them talking about your book. Some people try talking at conferences and use this venue to promote their book. Most people will contact libraries and bookstores in their general locations who have already purchased their book, or who may be interested in buying the book. If you are writing a children's book then it may be a good idea to try and set up some special events at local libraries. Libraries always enjoy when people come to read to the kids or help to promote some type of special event that will help to encourage children to read. Once you have planned at booked your event you should send out a press release to the local media that will announce the event. Also most newspapers have a section where you can list your event. Keep in mind that your book tour should not wear you out, nor should it be more than you are actually able to handle.
Since you will be setting up your own events than try not to plan one on top of the other. Remember that you want to get people excited about your book and interested in it enough to actually purchase it. Since most people will purchase an item that is well known and well talked about your book tour can prove to be one of the best things for your book. Just remember that no one can promote your book like you can. So hiring someone to do something that you can do all by yourself is really just pointless. You can create excitement about your book all by yourself and it really is not as difficult as many people tend to think. It will take time and effort and even money to get your from location to location, but in the end it would be well worth the effort. In some cases it may even be a good idea to give away a few free items to go along with the book when purchased. This is a great incentive especially when you are at an event trying to promote your new book.
