How to Plant a Garden

Shannon Frye
When you are deciding what to do with your garden you will need to find a good place to plant the garden. You will want to know which plants need sun all day and which need to be in the shade because this will determine where you plants all of the plants. You can plant grapes, lettuce, cucumbers, pumpkins, strawberries, peas, tomatoes and many other plants.

Once you know where you want the garden to be you can start getting the soil ready. I would suggest lightly misting the area so the ground will become moist and it will be easier to dig the holes for the seeds or plants. Dig up the area where you want to have your garden. I would suggest buying a small fence to put around the entire garden to keep the small animals out. Make sure you make the garden big enough for all of your plants. You will need to rake through all the soil and make the soil as rich as possible with nutrients.

I would keep the plants close to where you are working in the garden. Make sure to work your way from one side to another so you don't step on any plants. If you are working with seeds you run the risk of them not coming up. Make sure to read the tags so you know which plants you are buying, how much sun they need and how far apart the plants should be. You can purchase a small shovel to dig the holes for the plants. If the soil is very hard to dig through you will have to work through the soil until it becomes moist and easy to dig through.

Make sure that you plant the garden close to where you can water it. Don't plant the garden 3 acres away from your home. You will have to go and water the plants a few times a week or more. The more water the plants get the better fruits and veggies your garden will produce. Once all of the plants in your garden have been planted you will need to give them water. Lightly turn on the hose or hook up a sprinkler. You will want to water them lightly for about 3 minutes. You can also plant all of the plants in the early morning so that the plants sitting in the sun don't get dried out.
