Help your kindergarten students prepare for Mother's Day by creating keepsake handprints that can be brought home as a present.
You will need the following supplies for this craft:
- Plaster of Paris
- Water
- Sand
- Hands
- Mixing bucket
- Mixing stick
- Paint
- Paint brush
Follow the directions below to make your Mother's Day craft:
- Find a place you can create a sand row. This row must be long enough to accommodate one hand from each child in your class.
- Spread that row out with damp sand. You don't want the sand too wet or dry or you won't be able to get your hand print to stay.
- Press each child's hand down in to the sand and pull straight up. They will need your help because it is important that they pull their hand directly up in to the air and not move it in any directions. To help you remember which hand is which have your children stand in alphabetical order based on their names. For example you would do Abby first, Bobby second, and Jennifer third.
- Mix together your plaster. Use a large bucket and combine 2 cups of Plaster of Paris and ΒΌ cup of water for each student. So if you have 10 students you would need 20 cups of Plaster and 5 cups of water.
- Pour your Plaster of Paris mixture in to the sand hand that each child has made. Allow to dry overnight.
- Remove each hand from the sand.
- Allow children to paint their names and the date on the back of the hand. If they want to paint the front of their hand the same as their skin color or add finger nail polish, let them.
- Once the paint dries let each child wrap up the hand for their Mother for Mother's Day.
