How to Make Play Felt Cookies for a Tea Party Birthday Theme

If you are planning a tea party theme for your daughter's or grand-daughter's birthday party this year, make some cute felt sugar cookies for each guest to take home as a party favor. These play felt cookies are easy and inexpensive to make and will be sure to delight your guests!

Note: Although a sewing machine will make this project go faster, you can use a needle and thread instead.

Felt Types: You can choose to make your cookies from either acrylic or wool felt. Acrylic is cheaper, but wool is longer lasting. Choose the felt type that is within your budget. All the supplies to make these felt play cookies are available from local craft stores such as JoAnn's or Michael's.

Supplies Needed for Felt Sugar Cookies:

Cream felt (either acrylic or wool)
Various scraps or fat quarters of pastel flannels
Silver (metallic) thread
Needle
Polyfill (stuffing)
Scissors
Paper
Pencil

Step by Step Instructions for Tea Party Felt Sugar Cookies

1. Use the paper and pencil to draw your cookie patterns. In the photo, I made 4 types of cookies for a party: a heart, a circle, a star, and a bell. You can use these shapes or make up your own.

2. Use the pattern piece to cut out 2 pieces from the cream felt to make the top and back of 1 cookie.

3. Use the pattern piece to cut out 1 decorative top from the pastel flannel.

4. Trim the decorative top so that it is a quarter inch smaller all around than the cream felt.

5. Sew the decorative flannel top to the cream felt top.

6. Use the silver metallic thread to add dots to the new top. In the photo, I used French knots to make the dots. See this video if you do not know how to make French knots.

7. Pin the new top and the bottom together.

8. Sew the pieces together, leaving a small gap on one side to add stuffing. In the photo example, I used an overcast stitch on my sewing machine to sew the 2 sides together.

9. Add fiberfill to your desired thickness.

10. Stitch the opening closed.

11. Repeat for each cookie.

Felt Play Cookie Variations

1. Use different colors of metallic thread for the dots. If no children under age 3 will be receiving these felt play cookies, then you can use small beads for accents.

2. Use decorative rick-rack or ribbons to trim your cookies.

3. Package the felt play cookies in little boxes that your child can help decorate. Personalize each gift box with the guest's name.

4. Make a party invitation to reflect the felt cookie tea party theme. Add a mini felt cookie to the invitation.
