How to Make a Play Felt Food Pizza

Lyn McCallister
Kids love playing with pretend food and play kitchens. You can accessorize their activity by making your own play felt food to save money and to do a fun project with your kids. Play felt food requires some basic sewing skills and some basic materials (listed below) available from most major craft stores.

Note on felt: You can purchase two types of felt: wool felt or acrylic felt. Wool felt is much more expensive, but it lasts longer and comes in unlimited colors. You can even hand-dye your own wool felt. Acrylic felt is much cheaper but you are limited on colors and it does not last as long.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Make Play Felt Food Pizzas

1. Decide on the size of pizza that you want to make. This tutorial makes whole pizzas that your kids can decorate rather than individual slices. In the article photo, the pizza is approximately 6 inches across.

2. Cut 2 6-inch circles from the light tan felt for the crust. You can make a larger pizza if you want, but you will need to adjust the measurements for the sauce and cheese in the steps below.

3. Cut 1-5.75 inch circle from the red felt for the crust. Cut the edges slightly wavy to give the appearance of sauce.

4. Cut 1 5.5-inch circle from the cream felt for the cheese. Cut the edges wavy.

5. Sew the red felt sauce to the top of one side of the light tan felt crust.

6. Sew the cream felt cheese to the top of the completed sauce and crust unit.

7. Sew the 2 crust pieces together, making sure to leave a gap for the stuffing.

8. Stuff the crust to your desired thickness.

9. Sew the crust gap closed.

10. Plan your pizza toppings. You can make quite a few topping choices and store them in baggies for your kids to create different combinations. Let's cut 4 different toppings for this example.

11. Cut 2 small round circles from the red felt for pepperoni slices. Sew them together without stuffing. Make 5 sets.

12. Cut 2 mushroom shapes from the brown felt. Sew them together without stuffing. Make 5 sets.

13. Cut 6 very small circles from black felt for olives. The olives are not sewn together.

14. Cut 7 wavy strips from green felt for bell peppers. The peppers are not sewn together.

15. Give the finished pizza base and toppings to your children.

Optional: You can sew the toppings to the pizza rather than have them loose, if desired. Sew the individual toppings before sewing and stuffing the crust pieces.

Susan - I do a combination of sewing with machine and by hand. I tend to do the finer details with hand embroidery on play felt cookies, cupcakes, cakes, and the like. Thanks!

Very cute - I love felt crafts. Do you do your sewing for these on machine or by hand?
