How to Play Hacky Sack

The Writer
Hacky sack is something that I never really got into as a kid. I did, however, understand how to play the game. Had I wanted to, I feel like I could have been a hacky sack all star. I guess we will never know, though. In this article, I will impart some all star wisdom to you in the form of a how-to guide.

The key to being good at hacky sack is to understand everything that you can about the game itself. Obviously, the ultimate goal for a group game of hacky sack is to keep the ball in the air at all times. Group circle games will need for each person in the circle to kick the bag at least once in order to constitute a "hack". If every person in the group does it twice, it is considered a "double hack". If you are not playing in a large group, then there are some differences in philosophy that you must know about. Individual hacky sack is something that involves lots of freestyle moves that form together to make a sort of routine.

You need good shoes in order to be good at hack sack. The shoes should have a flat inside and outside surface with a flat top. If you have some shoes meant for skateboarding, then that can be a good way to go. If you want to get really good, then you will want to buy specialty schools like the Adidas Rod Laver, which is a shoe that many of the best hacky sack players in the world go for.

The first kick to learn in hacky sack is the inside kick. To execute this, you must drop the bag so that it is in front of you. Then, using the inside of your foot, kick the bag straight up into the air. You should place your foot in a way that your inside part of your foot should parallel to the ceiling or the sky. If you do this, the hacky sack bag will go directly up and not to the side. If you have trouble keeping your balance, then consider trying to put some flex in your opposite knee. After your first kick, try to catch the bag and continue the process. Repeat this process by dropping the bag onto your foot and kicking it up into the air until it becomes like second nature to you.

While the inside kick is certainly the easiest, you will also want to master the outside kick. To do this, you want to drop the bag to the side of your body and use the outside of your foot to perform the kick. This one will require you to use more dexterity and a little bit more athleticism. In this case, the outside of the foot should parallel to the sky in a way opposite to the inside kick. Perform the kick the same way that you did the inside kick. Practice makes perfect!

If you feel pretty confident in your abilities, then consider trying to do a toe kick. In order to do this, you should put the bag on the ground in front of you. Use your toes to strongly kick the bag straight into the air. It looks a little bit like the inside kick, except that it is a little bit more difficult.

Once you have mastered these kicks, then you are ready to engage in an active game of hacky sack. It will take a while to truly become good at this, but with time, you can become a solid player.
