How to Play Your iPod on Your PS3 Game Console

Rochelle Connery
If you have an iPod Classic or iPod Nano that syncs automatically as soon as it is plugged into a computerized power source, you can play it on your PlayStation 3 game console. Although the ability to copy tracks from the iPod to the PS3 might be limited due to iTunes music management rights, you can usually copy and play MP3 tracks from the iPod on your PlayStation 3. Note that this process does not work for the iPod Touch or the iPhone.

Things You'll Need:

Ipod Classic or iPod Nano

USB cable for iPod

PlayStation 3 console

PlayStation 3 controller

Step 1:

Turn on the PlayStation 3 and plug the iPod into the USB port with the USB cable.

Step 2:

Use the controller to navigate to the Music category on the PlayStation menu. Toggle down to the USB Device: Ipod selection.

Step 3:

Press the green triangle button and select "Display All" with the "X" button. A list of iPod contents will appear in the window.

Step 4:

Select "iPod Controls" with the "X" button and navigate to the "Music" folder. Press the green triangle button and choose the "Copy" or "Copy Multiple" options with the "X" button to copy all the music to the PlayStation. If you have subfolders on the iPod, you can click the "X" or green triangle buttons to make specific individual selections for playing and copying on the PlayStation.

You can play the music from the iPod without copying, too; just use the "X" or green triangle buttons in this section without selecting the "Copy" or "Copy Multiple" options. However, if the iPod doesn't charge from the Playstation, you might drain the battery, so you could be better off copying the music from the iPod to the Playstation.

Also, this method doesn't usually work using songs you bought from iTunes, just the MP3 files you own already and added to the iPod.

Step 5:

Unplug the iPod from the PlayStation when it is finished copying. If you need to cancel the copy command at any time, press the red circle button on the remote control and confirm the copy termination command.

There's no way to really "eject" the iPod like you can from iTunes, so you'll just have to unplug it from the USB port. Nothing will be altered on the device, since the PS3 can't add or remove anything from the iPod.
