How to Play Quarters

The Popular Drinking Game Has Several Variations, but One Seems More Popular

As a college student drinking alcohol is as second nature as skipping class and bringing laundry home for Mom. Drinking games have seemed to me like they are becoming more complex by the night and the end result is losing interest and people not having fun. There is a plethora of drinking games out there and one of the oldest and most popular is Quarters. The game of Quarters needs to be played on a hard surface because it involves bouncing coins and soft surfaces just do not compare to a standard wood table without a cloth.

The main broad goal of Quarters is to bounce a quarter off the table and into a specified drinking glass. Just a tip before you begin, currency is usually very dirty, so try to find a clean coin or wash the coins off before playing. What happens in the game is that the players around the table try to bounce the quarter into a small shot glass in the middle of the table if they fail the quarter moves to the next person, usually clockwise. If however, the person makes the shot, he or she gets to choose who drinks. This is where the game can vary a little bit. For longer games, beer is more appropriate, however if your goal is to see who is eliminated from playing first in a type of last man standing type deal, shots of liquor become more popular.

If the player makes the shot, he or she gets another. If the player's shot bounces off the rim of the glass but does not go in, he or she gets another shot. A player can keep shooting until he misses but if he hits the glass three times without making a shot, he has to take a drink and pass the quarter on clockwise.

Quarters is somewhat becoming a lost game so to speak. Games such as Beer Pong and Kings and Flip Cup have become more popular recently due to the interaction of more people at a time. However, getting the perfect bounce down in Quarters always comes in handy when an old school drinker summons you to his table and asks to play you in a game.
