How PNC Bank Duped a Faithful Customer

A Guide to Not Making the Same Mistake I Have

B.L. Boitson
Five years committed to one bank is a record for most people. Today, it is very hard to find a bank one can commit to in a long term manner to handle one's most personal possessions: money. Despite my five-year commitment to a once amazing financial institution, PNC Bank has failed me numerous times in the past year.

When I opened my account five years ago in New Jersey, I was so impressed by the bank hours, convenience, online banking, and generally wonderful customer service. Like every good college student, I had a few NSF's, and they took great care of me and helped me through some financial difficulties.

In the past two years however, after telling numerous friends and family about my wonderful banking experiences, I have been duped. Miscellaneous unauthorized charges, hours upon hours of customer service phone calls, and a long waiting list of unavailable funds have made me an unhappy customer.

Having worked in customer service for many years, I find I am a bit less tolerant of bad customer service. Despite this, I feel as though I have given PNC Bank many opportunities to make good on their claim of taking great care of their customers.

In the past two months alone, I have had to deal with miscellaneous charges that were imposed by my bank without my authorization as well as deposited funds being reversed due not making it to my home bank in time. I was told at one point I would have to close down my New Jersey account and re-open one on my hometown just to make sure I would have my funds more readily available. My first thoughts were: If I'm closing an account with you, I'm certainly not re-opening another account with you.

No national bank should tell their customers that despite the fact they have been in this "new" location for the past 4.5 years since opening the account, that they need to close their original account to more convenience the bank by having their funds deposited on time. This is simply bad customer service and not customer service at all; It is merely bank service.

I cannot count the hours I have spent on lunch breaks at my work fighting with this bank over a simple thing such as a deposit or a charge on my account. Instead of being offered solutions, I have resorted to becoming the "bad customer" that no one wants to handle. Having to become a customer I despise has caused me to rethink my banking situation.

I have come to a solution with PNC Bank: I am moving to Commerce. After doing some serious bank investigations I have found a new bank who is ranked number one in customer service and not only has convenience, but answers the phone immediately when I call instead of a touch dial program. I love it already.

I do not know what this bank will hold down the line, but for now, I just want to get out of this unappreciated bank. Instead of helping me keep my money safe, PNC Bank has caused me to lose many dollars and time over their mistakes and mishandlings. So, before I resort to being a mattress saver, I will give Commerce a try and hope that they will not fail me as PNC has.

I called four times to close an account and got horrible customer service ranging from ignorant to down-right rude. My parents are old and don't know their user IDs (if they even have them). One representative told me that I had to go in person to close the account. Another told me to send a series of letters; separate letters to change addresses, verify identity, and close the account. Am I being conned or what?

For the 2nd straight month, PNC bank deliberately drove my bank account into the read, then charged me 216.00 in NSF fees. Purchases that i made using my debit card were deliberately held for 6 days, until my account ran low on funds, then processed by PNC. This made small purchases I made, 3.90, 8.00, 7.47, cost me an additional 36.00 each. I am also filing a federal complaint against them. Today, I am removing all funds from them and and moving to another bank. It is a shame that in this country, our government allows the financial institutions the latitude to manipulate law by finding and creating loopholes to take money away from its customers. I am disgusted and it is time for these crooks to go to jail.

Hi; just noticed your blog and I quite agree. I just transferred from National City, and even though PNC has better service than NC (who didn't, except maybe 5/3), I still ended up having my information compromised and almost ended up getting several thousand dollars stolen. That said, when they found out what happened, I was issued provisional credit, and they also waived the $7.50 replacement fee since it was being replaced under condtions of dispute. The important thing to remember as a customer is that there are hundreds of people that work there, and you're going to have to track everything yourself. Always ask if something can be waived!

Same thing here. Last week I noticed an unauthorized charge and was issued a provisional credit. This is not the first time someone has used my PNC checkcard for an online fraudulent purchase. The kicker here is that they charged me a $7.50 fee for a replacement card. No wonder they are closing 22 branches in February. I cannot WAIT to get this last fraudulent charge cleared up so that I can close my account. I've been banking with them for almost 9 years now, but that was the last straw. This is a horrible bank that has absolutely no respect for longtime customers.

I know that this is a year old post. But, I too am having exactly the same problem, now. It's unbelievable that they are still in business. I'm done with them.

Good Luck with your new bank. Most likely the same will happen to you there.
