How to Make a Poodle Skirt Costume

Dana Kroeger
We all know what a poodle skirt is. Back in the 50's a girl was nobody unless she owned a poodle skirt. Now they actually have ways to make your own skirt. You can make it look just like the ones in the 1950's. You can get one for you or your daughter. You can wear them for Halloween or just for fun. We all like to dress up every now and then I know I do. In this article I will give you step-by-step instructions to be able to make one. I will also let you know where to buy the materials and what materials you need.

First I will let you know what materials you will need and where you can buy them. The first thing you are going to need is the fabric that you want to use. You can buy the fabric at Wal-Mart or any fabric store around. The next thing you will need is the little iron on poodle that goes on the skirt. You will also need the ruffles that go up under the skirt to make it wavy and a little puffy to make it look like you are wearing a poodle skirt and not just a regular skirt with the poodle on it. You will also need the saddle shoes and the poodle socks or just plain white ankle socks to make your outfit complete. You can buy these things online or you can go to your local fabric shop and buy them there. Now I will let you know how to make one. Another thing you will need to buy is the shirt or the fabric to make the shirt.

First off you will need to know what size you need and how much fabric you will be using because you do not want to buy too little or too much fabric. The reason I say you do not want to buy too much fabric is because fabric can get expensive. So before you ever go to your local fabric shop you should get all the measurements you will need so that you can hand it to them and they can cut that amount. Some fabric shops will do the measurements for you, but not all of them.

Next you will need to bring the fabric home and then either you sew it up or you get someone who knows how to do it to. If you do not know how to sew or you do not know anyone who does know how to sew then you should take the fabric to a seamstress. This will cost you more money, but you do not want to try and make one and mess it up and have to buy more fabric. This is why I say go to a seamstress.

First you will need to sew the ruffle part to the regular fabric. Then you will need to sew the fabric to look like a skirt. Then from there you will need to get the iron on poodle and iron it on. If you want to and you are really good at sewing or you want to pay someone to do it then you can sew the poodle and the line from the poodle's tail on yourself. It would look a lot better if you could sew the poodle on yourself than if you buy the iron on poodle, but some people like the iron on ones. However you feel like doing it.

After the poodle the skirt should be done. You can then either make your own shirt or you can go buy on. In my opinion I would rather go buy one because it will be a lot cheaper. Then you can buy the scarf, shoes, and socks that way your poodle skirt costume will be complete.

This is my step-by-step guide to making a fifties poodle skirt costume. If there is anything that I left out then please feel free to add to it. I hope this helps you out if you are planning on making your own poodle skirt costume. I will even provide a picture of so that you will be able to look at one.

Here is a less wordy way of saying this:

    1) buy fabric
    2) take to seamstress

Voila!!! What could be more easy.

This is the biggest waste of cyberspace I ever saw -- not to mention the time I took to read it. The joke is on me I guess.

    This is hilarious!!!

I am now going to give you a tutorial on how to make a beaded wedding dress. Buy some pretty fabric, buy some beads, now sew it up. Presto! Instant wedding dress! Thanks for the laugh!
