How to Pop an Entire Bag of Microwave Popcorn

Sarah Holmes
Tonight I popped a bag of popcorn which had no kernals left. I waited until there was about 2 to 3 seconds between pops and I immediately took the bag out. However as we all know this is not typical. Most of us usually pop popcorn in which lots of the kernals left unpopped. When this happens what do you do?

My sister-in-law taught me this interesting trick recently which allows you to pop an entire bag of popcorn. It is easy enough to do. Simply pour out the popcorn which is popped and leave the unpopped popcorn inside the bag. Then place the bag in the microwave folded similar to how it was folded before. Just close the top by hand. Heat on high for a few seconds and listen carefully. The other kernals will pop and allow you to completely pop the entire bag of popcorn. This may be an extreme way of saving money but it is easy and it works.

Simply make sure the kernals are placed on the heating source of the popcorn bag (the gray part of the bag) and be sure to watch it carefully. Because there is less popcorn to pop, you shouldn't need to put the bag in for any longer than 40 seconds and you can probably put the bag in for a lot less time.

It is easier to burn the popcorn with fewer kernals, so be sure to watch it carefully. Some of us may not be willing to go to this type of measure in order not to waste popcorn, but then again if you are down to your last bag of popcorn and you don't feel like going to the store, this might be an idea for you to try.

Always buy organic popcorn which is not genetically modified. It is better for you and the environment. If you want to know why you can read my other article written on the topic. If you are interested in making your own microwave popcorn, you can read my other article on the topic.

In the meantime, you can finish popping all the popcorn in your bag of microwave popcorn before throwing it away. You might have to pause your movie, but you can save a fraction of a cent by using this method.

Although this is not the easiest or most efficient way to save money in this economy, I did find this technique fascinating and therefore I thought I would share it with you. If anything it would make a great science experiment to do with the kids.

Hugs to you~ My husband and I have a ritual bag of popcorn every Sunday eve while watching 60 minutes. We were always annoyed that we had leftover unpopped kernels. Will definitely try your suggestion.
