The first step in making potpourri is to get together the ingredients you will need. Find a recipe, either in a book or from a friend or on the internet. Be sure that the ingredients of the recipe you want to use are available in your area. Once you get all the components of your project, you are ready to start.
Put the flowers and other dry ingredients in a bowl and gently mix them together. Us a glass or glazed pottery bowl. Using metal could cause a reaction to the essential oils you will be using for scent. Make sure the bowl is large enough to hold everything you will be adding.
Once the dry ingredients are mixed you will need to add the essential oil. Use an eyedropper to scatter the oil a few drops at a time. Be sure to get it as evenly distributed as possible. Then, stir the mixture again. Every time you stir, be very gentle so as to not crush the more delicate ingredients.
Next the mixture should be placed in a large brown paper bag that has been lined with wax paper. This is so the oils will not seep into the paper and make the bag smell good instead of the potpourri. Fold the top of the bag to seal it and use a paper clip or clothespin to keep it shut. Now you should place the bag in a dry, dark, cool place and let the mixture cure for at least two weeks.
Every two days open the bag and stir the contents with a wooden spoon. This will ensure the ingredients are blended. In this way, the scents of the flowers, herbs, spices, and oils will permeate one another.
After the mixture has cured it is ready to be used. Place the potpourri in a decorative container. Fill the bowl as full as possible. This will give the potpourri some dimension and add texture to your d©cor, along with a lovely fragrance.
Making potpourri can be a very enjoyable hobby. You can use it in your own home or give it as a gift. Be sure to put it in an air-tight container if you are giving it as a gift. This will keep it fresh until the recipient decides to use it. Hopefully, these tips will help you get started making lovely, fragrant potpourri for you and your family to enjoy.
