Potty training your puppy can be quite a chore. It takes a lot of patience and you have to make sure you are consistent. Here are some tips and strategies on how to potty train your puppy.

One of the main things to remember is that your puppy really does want to please you. It is up to you to make him understand what it is that you want from him. Praise him when he goes potty outside. Praise him alot. This will help to reinforce what you expect from him. Also, if you catch him in the act of going potty in the house, firmly tell him NO!! then take him outside to his spot. This will also reinforce what you want.

You need to watch your puppy closely while potty training him. Puppies are like babies they can't hold it for very long. If you notice that he quits playing and starts to sniff around frantically, he is looking for a place to relieve himself. If he starts whining and circling, these are signs that you should get him outside quick or he might have an accident in the house.

While potty training your puppy he will need to go out quite often. You should take him outside first thing in the morning when he wakes up, after he eats, after he drinks and after he wakes up from a nap. Always make sure that you praise him after he goes potty. This way he knows that he did good and that he made you happy. Remember, puppies like to make you happy.

Don't let your puppy have the run of the house while you are potty training him. Get him a crate. Make sure that it is the right size for him. You don't want it too small but if it is too big he will potty on one side of it and sleep on the other side. If it is the right size for him he generally will not go potty in it because dogs don't like to mess where they sleep.

While you are potty training your puppy try to keep on the same schedule everyday. This will help your puppy to train his bladder and help him to know a schedule. Be patient and try to remember that accidents are going to happen no matter what. If done right, potty training your puppy will not take real long. Just follow these tips and strategies on how to potty train your puppy and soon he will get it all figured out. Soon he will be going to the door so you can let him out. Both you and your puppy will be happy and that will make all this worthwhile.
