How Poweful Has Jon Stewart Become?

Richard McDuff
"Is there a sense that you don't want this?" Mr. Stewart asked. "That you may look at the country and think, 'You know, when I thought I was going to get this, it was a relatively new car. Now look at it!'

This is a quote from the New York Times from the interview that Jon Stewart had with Senator Barack Obama. Why is the main stream press watching a comedy show on the cable network Comedy Central for their news?

Has Jon Stewart become so influential that the mainstream press has laid off many of their political journalists, and they are now getting their news from a 7 time Emmy winning fake news show host on the Comedy Central?

In January 2005, CNN announced that it had canceled Crossfire. When asked about the cancellations, CNN incoming President, Jonathan Klein, made a reference to Jon Stewart's appearance on the show: "I think he made a good point about the noise level of these types of shows, which does nothing to illuminate the issues of the day.

Jon Stewart had criticized Tucker Carlson and co-host Paul Begala as partisan hacks on their CNN show "Crossfire" in 2004 . This televised show has become one of the most popular videos shows on the internet. Stewart criticized Crossfire about not being responsible in educating the public about political issues, but engaging in partisan politics. Does Jon Stewart now have the power to have "real news journalists" ired"?

Is the mainstream political press becoming so pressed for "news" that they are willing to channel surf to a show that is proceeded by a show about puppets making crank calls, to find their news? Or is their a fine line between fake news and real news?

Has the two time host of the Academy Awards become so "news worthy" that a news intern is appointed to watch the "The Daily Show" for all the major news channels and press? Has Jon Stewart become so respectable that people are actually listening to him? Are they willing to interview him, just to see how funny he really is?

I watch the Daily Show for my news. I was trained in college to be skeptical about "the objectivity of News". Is there really such a thing as objectivity? Who owns the news broadcasting companies, and who pays the advertising for their objectivity? The Daily Show helps to ease the pain of manipulation and exploitation by the News channels, with the ridicule of these organizations. They only seek to entertain us rather than gather and report legitimate news.

I have found that the election broadcasting on the Daily Show to be as illuminating as any election coverage on the other channels could possibly be.

Ok, the election segment Indecision 2008 is a recycling of title Indecision 2004, only the characters have changed. I am still not sure what Indecision 2008 means. I always tell my stepson that it is comedy, and you have to give it a certain amount of leeway.

I think that a more appropriate segment name should have been the Road to Hell 2008. I only have sympathy and tears for the person that inherits this economic mess.

While Bush is off golfing and lounging around his acreage, this economic tragedy will be left in the hands of Obama or McCain.

My stepson asks me who I hope wins this election, I want to see McCain win, because comedians will have more fun with the McCain/Palin team. The economy is so bad that it will take one, possibly two to straighten it out, I will need a good portion of laughter to get through it.
