After you have created your character, be it Destroyer, Vanquisher, or Alchemist, start the game. Once you have the gist of the town's layout, the NPC's, and their functions, head on into the mines! You will want to go ahead and push your way down through the first two or three levels, acquiring some decent beginners gear and a few levels; preferably level 5. It's crucial that you spend this time getting used to the combat system as well as how your characters powers work, and how best to utilize them in combat. It always helps to be on top of your game when the power leveling starts. Be sure to pick up as many town portal scrolls and health potions as possible, too.
Once you've gotten yourself up to level 4 or 5, you're ready to power-level yourself up in Torchlight! Use a scroll of town portal to jet yourself back to the surface lickety split like, and hit up Triya, the Gem Merchant. Here is where you will learn a valuable lesson about Torchlight: Triya will almost always have random dungeon maps for sale. I suggested you be at least level 5 when you start them, because the lowest level ones are for levels 1 through 10. At this point, I would highly recommend avoiding higher level dungeon maps, as you will simply get creamed and die a horrible, horrible death... and that's kind of the opposite of power leveling!
Go ahead and buy as many random dungeon maps as you can, although you only have to get one (since you can only do one at a time, anyways). These maps will be the key to your power leveling success! They always have slightly tougher enemies than your level (thus giving greater experience when defeated), drop better loot and potions than what you are currently finding, and are all relatively short and sweet. In these dungeons, you will find yourself leveling up rather rapidly, and completing them in under ten minutes time apiece. Some are as short as five! After just two or three of these, you will already be considerably more powerful than the dungeon level you left behind from the main quest line.
From here, you can simply lather, rinse, and repeat! Do these random dungeon maps as often as you like, as Triya will always have more of them every time you come back to her, and you can never have too much loot, gold, and power. Good luck, and happy adventuring!
