Whether you know it now or not, it is possible to simplify your life. It does take some determination to do so, but it is not impossible. Here are some tips for slowing down and simplifying things.
1. Let your mantra become, "less is more." Isn't it amazing how much "stuff" we can collect over time, and how much of it we never do anything with it? While it may be true that we get some sort of enjoyment over owning material possessions, the more we collect, in most cases the more we feel burdened. Eventually this can lead to scattered thoughts, confusion and stress.
The way around this is to begin getting rid of any material possessions that you no longer need, or want and donate them to a local charity or second hand store. This accomplishes two things, you will feel lighter and your home will feel less cramped, plus you'll also feel good about gving the items to people who can actually use them.
2. Reduce the number of activities you participate in. Having an active life can be good for you, but not if it leaves you feeling stressed out and tired. Many of us take on far more than we should when it comes to obligations and recreational activities.
Just take a few minutes and think about what you do on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Do you absolutely need to do all these thing? Have you taken on responsibilities that are not even yours? Are you doing activities that you don't even enjoy anymore? Make a list of your activities and or obligations and get rid of any that you can, even if you have to do so over time.
3. Spend some time each day in silence. Daily meditation is a great way to do this because it teaches you how to shut out the mental and physical noise fo your life on a regular basis. Practicing even five minutes of meditation each day can reduce your stress levels drastically, and help you to feel more centered, calm and happy.
If you are fortunate enough to live near a park or natural setting, you can boost this feeling even more by spending some time each day in nature. While it won't be completely silent, natural settings have soothing sounds such as running water, singing birds, and wind moving through the trees, which believe it or not, automatically trigger feelings of peace and well-being.
The truth is when it comes right down to it, living a life of simplicity is about learning how to slow down, and connect more deeply with the inner you. Whether you choose to do that by simplifying your surroundings, reducing the activities in your schedule, or enjoying a daily five minute meditation break, the result is always going to be the same, a happier, healthier, and more peaceful you!
