How to Prepare for Bringing Home a New Puppy

From Shopping to Puppy Proofing

Welcoming a new puppy to the family is a great joy. They won't just be a pet but a companion, a protector, and a special member of the family.

There are a lot of preparations to be made prior to bringing the puppy home and a lot of adjustments have to be made to the home itself in order to create a safe and fun environment.

Here are a few of those necessary adjustments and preparations that should be done prior to bringing home a new puppy.

Selection

Even before a puppy is selected it's imperative that the owners determine if their home will be able to accommodate him. Considering the size, breed, and temperament of the dog are just a few things that need to be discussed before choosing a puppy. In doing so, this will prevent a family from having to surrender the pet if they can't adjust to their new environment.

Puppy Shopping

Like a baby a puppy also requires items to live a healthy and happy life. Prior to bringing the puppy home, owners should purchase food, toys, a dog bed, a crate or kennel, dog treats, and water and food bowls. Purchasing these items prior to the puppy's arrival will not only make the owners prepared but also make the transition easier for all involved.

Household Shopping

Shopping for the puppy is important but it's also important to purchase items for the home. Things such as carpet cleaner, stain and odor remover, air freshener, and potty pads should be on hand at all times. Buying extra initially will not only prepare the owner it will also prevent them from running out.

House Preparation

When a baby reaches a certain age adjustments need to be made to the home itself and bringing home a new puppy is no different. Baby proofing or in this case puppy proofing a home will keep him safe and prevent any accidents from happening.

Like babies, puppies chew on anything they can get their paws on. Because of this it's important to remove all small or expensive items from the environment so they won't be damaged or have to be replaced.

Electrical outlets should be covered, electrical cords should be hidden, cupboard and drawer locks should be installed, and any household cleaners or disinfectants should be removed and put away. These things will look attractive to the puppy and his curiosity will get the best of him.

Again, these preparations should be done prior to bringing the puppy home to ensure his and the family's safety.

Welcoming a furry friend into the family is so exciting but also a very serious matter. Following these steps will make the transition easier, safer, and happier for the puppy and the family.
