How to Prepare the Car for a Long Road Trip

Road Trip Planning Guide

Preparing for a road trip takes effort and planning. It is understandable to feel overwhelmed if you have not taken a road trip recently. Spending time planning before you start your trip, can save you time, energy, and money. Here are some tips to help you with road trip planning.

While planning your road trip, think about the weather. What is the current season? If it is summer prepare for surviving a few hours in the elements, if for any reason you were delayed. This could be due to a tire needing changing or traffic that has come to a complete stop. Have large amounts of bottled water available for every person who will be traveling, at least one or more gallons per day that you will spending in the car. Carry bug repellents that are gentle on the skin.

For travel during cooler months and winter prepare for the lowest temperature. Look in your linen closet for the warmest blankets that you can find. These can be older blankets that you do not use regularly. Auto supply stores do carry survival gear blankets. These blankets usually are wool. When layered with another blanket that feels soft on the skin, you will be warm in the event your heating system encounters problems.

During all seasons of the year, be sure to pack adequate amounts of food and water. Do not depend on restaurants for every single meal and snack. Having food in the car cuts down on the amount of stops that need to be made. Have a mixture of fresh foods, and nonperishable items that can be eaten in the event of an emergency. Bring a basic CPR kit with bandages and solutions for minor health problems. This is the place to store all medications, pain relievers, medicine fordiarrhea and intestinal upset.

Do not depend blindly on your GPS system. Your GPS may not be updated with new roads, or older roads that have closed. Before you go on your trip, make sure that you print out directions from google maps or another website that offers detailed driving directions. If you are taking an alternate route always refer to your map. In the event that you did not bring a map with you stop at the visitors center when entering each state. There are free maps available. If you are near a gas station, you can purchase state wide maps that have been updated.

Traveling with the proper road trip directions can ease your worries. Knowing that you have enough water, food, money, and survival gear in case of emergencies allows you to concentrate on the road. Use these tips to help you have a successful road trip

Good tips! I always try to have a blanket in my car, you never know when you might need it. It's also nice to have in case the kids fall asleep in the car, or if a child get's sick while your driving around (as I have had happen!). I find a blanket is essential for not only road trips, but every day trips!
