How to Prepare for a Cesarean Section

Leanne Bloms
It's hard the few weeks before your scheduled Cesarean Section. You are at the point of your pregnancy that you are uncomfortable, and the anticipation of a new baby in your home can be very overwhelming. Not to worry, you are not alone. Many expectant mothers have the same fears. Knowing what to expect is half the battle. Talking to your doctor with all of your questions and concerns can ease your mind significantly. Do not be afraid to ask your Doctor anything. They are there to answer any question, as dumb as you think it may be.

In the last few weeks of your pregnancy, you will be doing a lot of last minute chores. Your doctor will be scheduling your surgery, and most likely you will need to register at your local hospital if you haven't done so already. You will be visiting your Doctor by now on a weekly basis, so keep tabs of any physical changes you may be encountering, and keep a list of concerns and questions. You will probably be finishing the nursery by now, and picking up those last minute items you may need.

Now is the time that I would start to pack my bag for the hospital in case your water were to break, or your Doctor thinks you will need to go in earlier. You will not want to feel rushed in that case, you will already be under enough stress. I recommend making a list and ask others for advice of what you will actually need to bring. Don't over pack. I made that mistake with my first daughter and when it was time to go home, my poor husband had to make like ten trips to the car and all I wanted to do was leave.

If you make it to your scheduled date, make sure you get plenty of rest the night before. This may seem like the hardest thing to do but it is one of the most important. You will have a lot on your mind and the best thing for you and your baby right now is rest.. You probably will not be able to eat the day of your surgery, so eat a good healthy meal before bedtime. When you wake up, I also recommend taking a hot bath. Because of your scar you will not be able to bathe for a minimum of two weeks, so enjoy. Once you are ready to go, your bags should already be packed and you can be on your way.

Your Doctor will tell you what time to arrive at the hospital, but I recommend getting there a little earlier. If you are not familiar with the hospital this will give you a little time to find the waiting room, restrooms and all the essentials. Then, I would recommend checking in at the nurses station and they will get you all set up. Congratulations on being a new mother! Remember to cherish every moment.
