How You Can Prepare for College Now!

High School is Not Too Early

College, school after high school; the next big step. For many of us, college is something we've looked forward to for most of our lives. If is the first big step in adulthood. We get jobs, go to classes, and move away from home. Understandably, college is frightening; you are suddenly given responsibilities you haven't had before. Is there a way to avoid some of the inevitable strife? How can we prepare for college now?

Most teens believe that the only way you can prepare for college while in high school is to get good grades. While this is definitely important, there are other things to consider. Here is a list of measures you can take RIGHT NOW to help you be successful in college later.

1. Take the right classes

Consider carefully what your strengths and interests are. Then choose the classes that are best for you. Do you want to take AP Classes? Or are you more interested in Concurrent Enrollment? Take classes for a purpose.

2. Develop good leadership skills

College admission boards look at more than academics. One of the most importants aspects of a college application is leadership involvement. Get involved! Try out for student council clubs or team leadership. Look around your community for service opportunities. School and community involvement can make or break your college application.

3. Take the ACT (or SAT) several times

Don't procrastinate! You don't want to have to take these tests in the December of your senior years. If you have them several times, you will be more successful and be more accepting of your score.

4. Apply for Scholarships

You might think that it is too early to apply for scholarships, but it is never too early. As soon as you start high school, check for scholarship opportunities. Apply for all that you quality for, because you never know what you will get.

5. Practice good study habits

As most of you know, college is not a "piece of cake." If you practice good study habits now, you will find college courses much more manageable.

6. Read!

A college-level education requires extensive amounts of reading/ Acquiring good reading skills amplified your logical and comprehensive thinking skills and helps you succeed in all academic areas, including math! So pick a book and read!

7. Learn to write

It is a vital for you to know how to write college-level papers. Although you might not see it now, writing is a skill that is necessary for every college student to have. Practice hard and learn to write well now.

8. Plan out a budget

College is not inexpensive. You need to start saving your money now to use later. What if you can't get a job? You can learn and practice budgeting habits even if you don't have a regular income. These habits will prove to be very useful in the future.

9. Learn how to cook

Most people wouldn't think that culinary skills prepare you for college. In most cases, you move away from home when you begin college. If you know how to cook your own meals, you will save yourself time and money.

10. Learn basic housekeeping skills

Yes, this applies to both guys and girls. You need to know how to do laundry, clean the house, and do basic sewing repairs. The best way to learn these skills is to practice!

College preparedness is more than just having a high GPA. Get yourself involved, learn some skills, and have a great time doing it. If you go into college well prepared, college will be a fun and exciting chapter in your life.
