If you have children at home, there is good news. You may have already taken some of the steps that you should follow to prepare for an earthquake. If not, that's okay. This article will cover the basics on how to prepare your home, yourself, and your family in case of an earthquake. Many people know whether or not they live in an area that is prone to earthquakes. However, earthquakes are caused by a variety of phenomena. That means that you may encounter an earthquake whether you live in an earthquake prone part of the country or not.

How to Prepare for an Earthquake: Prepare Your Home

If you have children, you have probably done this already. If not, here is some advice. Walk through your home and look for items that will fall down in an earthquake. Identify things that topple easily and think of ways to secure them. At the very least, secure all things that can cause serious bodily injury. Attach bookshelves to the walls with braces that you can buy at a hardware store. Move heavy objects to lower shelves. Don't hang heavy objects over beds, sofas, and tables where people can be taken unaware.

How to Prepare for an Earthquake: Identify a Meeting Place

Talk to your family and tell them where to go in case of an earthquake. Prepare a space in your home that is your safe spot, and make sure everyone knows where it is. It should be away from windows, electrical lines, and furniture that can fall. An interior wall is a good choice, or an interior bathroom. Have a secondary meeting place picked out in case the earthquake damages your home to a degree where it is no longer safe. Choose an outdoor location away from hazards.

How to Prepare for an Earthquake: Have Emergency Supplies on Hand

There are several supplies that can make your life easier in an earthquake or any disaster. These include a flashlight, first aid kit, good shoes, clean water, and emergency food supplies. If you go camping, separate out some of your camping supplies and keep them close at hand. You might want to grab them in case you need to evacuate your home, and they can be combined with other emergency supplies.

The best way to prepare for an emergency like an earthquake is to prepare in advance and keep a clear head. Be prepared to take care of yourself and your family in the face of a large scale disaster.

Thankfully the East Coast suffers few of them, but it's nice to have a plan anyway.
