Preparation for guests # 1
Get normal chores done and out of the way. I know that when I worked, laundry was done on the weekends and when guests were to arrive I made sure this was done before the arrival so that we could all relax and enjoy the visit. Cleaning chores are done a few days prior to the arrival, especially common areas like bathrooms and kitchen. Don't forget to take out the trash!
Preparation for guests # 2
Prior to the arrival of the guests, pick up everywhere and "de-clutter". Things like nail clippers and files which tend to be left beside favorite chairs should be put away, as well as newspapers, magazines and other personal items. Cleaning is not necessarily a must, but picking up is always appropriate and makes the entire house look cleaner. Once picked up, a quick use of a "Swiffer Duster" is all that is needed. Make use of extra chairs in the living room so that everyone will have a place to relax and visit. Stools or cushions on the floor can also be used for conversation gatherings.
We have two very large decks that are used extensively and they are made ready and inviting for relaxing outside with snacks and drinks. I find that my guests actually prefer the outside areas so make use of any available to you.
Preparation for guests # 3
Prepare the guest bedroom with the thought in mind of what you would like to have and see if you were the one arriving! Clean sheets (the best you have) are nice with extra bedding available if needed. I like to fold a nice quilt at the foot of the bed in case my guests need extra covers during the night. Extra pillows are another item I offer them to use. A place to put their luggage, closet space and a comfortable chair is available. Fresh flowers are a nice touch as well as reading material on the nightstand.
Since my guest bedroom does not have an adjoining bath, I try to make the nearest bath as inviting as possible. I remove all clutter from the vanity and offer my guests clean fluffy towels and wash cloths along with new bars of soaps for their use. Shampoos and hair dryers are available if needed. I find night lights are useful for guests moving about in the dark in a strange location.
Preparation for guests # 4
I try to consider any special needs that my guests might have. Sometimes we have guests that bring their dogs with them. Dogs are a part of the family and I always provide dishes for water and food for the animal in the guest room. I even have extra dog beds that can be used.
Enjoying the visit!
A little thought and preparation will go far in making a weekend visit from friends enjoyable and memorable.
Enjoy the moment, it will never return.

We (no dogs) would like to visit soon. You painted a lovely, peaceful picture in my mind! Very enjoyable article that I shall take to heart for my next out of state relatives due later this summer. I believe I was taught to do things as you described..........the #1 about last minute stuff seems to get me rushing about......poor planning I suspect. And is that a cat in your picture?
