How to Prepare for a Hurricane

Roger C.
One of the most common and destructive natural disaster is a hurricane. These events are very common in Central America, the Caribbean, and the south-east coast of the U.S. - having occurrences of several each year. Hurricanes are harmful not only because of the extreme amount of energy they unleash in the affected areas, but also because their area of damage extends for hundreds of miles. This causes a financial loss of millions of dollars worth of damaged property and several human casualties.

Although we can't prevent hurricanes from happening, we can take steps to minimize the effect a hurricane might have in your property. Being ready for a hurricane is crucial to protect your loved ones and your home and the good news is that you don't need a huge investment to do so.

In your home, you can invest in window protection. Hurricane shutters are a great option to prevent flying objects in a hurricane to fly though your windows. They come in several sizes, shapes and prices, so you must check with your city for local building codes about window protection products. There are lists of approved products you can get as well as instructions to install them yourself, or having someone else to install them for you.

To avoid having flying debris around your house, it is important to keep your yard clean. High speed winds can lift anything on the ground and convert it into a projectile that can cause great damage. Clean up and trim your trees so their branches can't break from it and kill someone. Store all small statues, land mowers, grills, bird houses or anything in your yard that wind can lift and throw.

Before the hurricanes arrive, you need to plan and create an emergency plan for you and your family. Choose a place in which to stay in case of a hurricane such as a basement, a closet, or a room with no windows. Have ready a first-aid kit, water, a flashlight, food, and a radio with batteries in your shelter and make sure everybody is there during the hurricane.

In case of a severe hurricane, the best thing to do is to evacuate. Listen to the recommendations of your local authorities about this and follow their advice. Many people are killed every year because they refuse to leave their homes. Your property is important but your life and your family is more; go to a family member in another city or to a storm shelter. Both options could save your life.
