What is an ice storm?
One of the most dangerous forms of weather known to man, an ice storm is a storm that creates at least a quarter of an inch of ice during freezing rain. Freezing rain occurs when raindrops collide with freezing or sub-freezing temperature, as the rain freezes, turning to ice. Dangerous driving conditions result as ice builds up on roads, tree limbs, and power lines.
Most ice storms knock out electrical power lines, leaving thousands without electricity at the worst time of the year when temperatures are below freezing. Tragically, many loose their lives during ice storms, not only by being outside, but also by fires inside their homes. Here a few tips to stay safe if an ice storm invades your area.
Staying Safe Driving in the Storm
Of course the best place to be is indoors and not on the dangerous icy roads. However, if you don't have a choice, here are some suggestions for staying safe.
* If possible, pull over to the side of the road and call for help.
* Drive slowly, making smooth and exact movements, foreseeing land changes, as well as curves in the road.
* If you do slide, stay off your brakes and gas, trying to counter steer.
* Don't drive over downed power lines. Also, never try to move a power line.
Walking in the Storm
If you find yourself outside walking, in the middle of an ice storm, position your feet out, pretending you're a penguin. Slightly bend over, keeping your hands out of your pocket, spreading your arms out for balance. Then, walk flatfooted, ever so slowly.
Staying Safe inside Your Home
* Prepare before the storm
Before the storm strikes your community, stock up on needed supplies such as batteries, battery-operated radios, canned goods, water, medicines, baby articles, and first-aid items. Be sure your cars have all-season tires or snow tires if you live anywhere but Florida. Also, have an emergency heating source, as well as a fire extinguisher and smoke detector.
* Don't use your stove for heat----Despite what you may have been told, you should not substitute your stove's oven and/or burners to stay warm, as small amounts of carbon monoxide can result in sickness and even death.
* Don't Burn Candles----Also, avoid using any open flames for heating. Instead, use a battery-operated space heater to stay warm, using caution. Heaters should be at least three feet from any combustible material, and not on carpeting.
Most of all try to stay calm and don't panic. If you become hysterical, you only make matters worse. When the storm is at its worst, just be encouraged that it won't last forever. In other words, try to stay positive, as well as use your common sense.
