How to Prepare for a Meeting with Future Client

Michelle Knudson
We often get nervous the first time that we meet a client. Meetings always make us nervous since we do not know if we can impress the client to choose us for the job. We have to accept it that we will not always win the future client project all the time. Here are four ways to help you prepare for a meeting with future clients.

Professional Portfolio

You want to bring a portfolio that shows previous work. You need to get permission from clients to release information to others about projects. You want to be able to show future clients some of the most impressive work that you've accomplished in the past with clients. You have one chance to impress them and justify your rates. You want them to know that you are confident that you can do the job so you need your work to convince the client to hire you. You want them to know that you are worth the money due to nearly perfect work.

Digital Recorder

You want to record every meeting with a future client. It is important to be able to remember specific details of the project when we acquired a new client. The digital recorder will keep us on track just in case our notes didn't come out right or some of them we do not understand due to short scribble.

Notebook & Pen

We often need to bring to a notebook and pen with us. It gives the impression that we are prepared. You want to have someone take notes on a laptop computer as well to have a second backup. The paper and pen are the notes that you refer to as you work on the project.

Business Card

Make sure to give them a business card at the meeting. Always give out a business two at time to each person in the room. You want them to always remember the meeting with you in order to make you stand out so pass along a business card. You want to have as much contact information on business card as possible so you leave plenty of ways for them to contact you.

Brochures are another excellent thing to give out in a meeting. Hand them a professional folder that includes your Portfolio, Brochure, and Business Card. The goal is to win the new client account.
