The first thing on the list is to call a family meeting to discuss what you and your family will need. Many lives have been lost or drastically changed because no one had a plan. You will need to decide if you will ride out the storm or evacuate. If you decide to stay have a place where the whole family can come together. This place can be a big closet or a bathroom. Make sure that you are away from all windows. After you have decided where you will stay during the storm, you will decide what items you will need. Bring a box to this meeting so that you can place all the items that you will need in one place.
You will need jar candles and a lighter or matches in case the lights go. I would also suggest a flashlight. A hand held battery operated radio will also be needed. This will help keep you informed on what is going on during and after the storm. Make sure that you always keep a fresh supply on batteries.
After this you will need to decide what type of can goods you will need. You will need food that does not require cooking. Tuna, crackers, spam, Vienna sausage etc. are just a few items that will hold you over. Make sure that you have a hand held can opener. It is very important that you have enough bottled water. You can survive longer with water than food.
If you have small children you want to make sure that you have a lot of milk and diapers. Make sure you keep your medicine in a specific location so that you can get to it quickly. Keep all of your important papers and documents in one location as well.
Remember to stay calm and do not panic.
