How to Preserve Your Family's Memories

Erik Van Tongerloo
Preserving your family's memories is important in your life. When you are a teenager you often don't see the importance of preserving family memories but this will change quickly when you lose one of your relatives. Pictures of your family members reflect memorable moments of the past and I realized when my father died that we didn't have much pictures of him because he took mostly the pictures. It is sad but you only realize the importance when it is too late. Since that time I changed my lifestyle and I try to collect so many family memories as possible.

However, a picture is maybe one of the most popular family memories; there are plenty of possibilities to preserve family memories. Family memories can be anything that creates unforgettable family reminiscences. Pictures, jewels, a diary and even a doll of your child can contribute to your collection of family memories. Preserving your family's memories requires paying attention to memorable moments of the past and creativity.

Some suggestions are:

A PHOTO ALBUM
A photo album is maybe one of the most original ideas to create family memories. In order to make sure your children and grandchildren will ever enjoy these pictures; you need to pay attention to the quality of your pictures and protect them to the effects of age. Digitalize your pictures for having a copy of your original one and store these on more than one CD or DVD. It is recommended after several years to make a copy on a new CD or DVD because there is no certainty you can use these CD's or DVD's in the future. Another possibility is to store your pictures also in online photo sharing sites.

When you start with creating your photo album, there is need for organizing your photos. Chronology is often the best solution because you can follow the evolution in your life, from the time you were a baby, your school time, your first vacation abroad with your family, your marriage, your first child and all the moments which passed in your life.

A SLIDE SHOW
Almost everyone uses now a digital camera. You can upload these pictures on your hard disk of your computer and picture software gives you the possibility to make slideshows of these pictures. A slideshow can be considered as a digital photo album. You can create slideshows of memorable family moments in your life with suitable music and it is possible to burn them on a DVD and can be seen as well on your computer screen as on television. It is really amazing to enjoy these family memories with your children, grandchildren or everyone you want to show these shows.

A VIDEO OR DVD
A video of memorable moments of your life is great for preserving family memories. Your wedding, the 50th anniversary of your marriage (also called golden jubilee) and some other celebrations are popular family memories are often made by professional photographers. This is probably the best choice for such events.

Digital camcorders are not expensive anymore and can now be used by almost everyone for preserving interesting family activities. Is it not nice to see a video of the moments when your children were born? A picture is beautiful but doesn't show the movements and you can't hear the real sound when the baby is crying or speak his or her first words. It is possible to make movies of many events in your family's life and shows real actions of your family members. Nowadays these videos are stored on a DVD and you can burn your videos onto a DVD format. Recent models of digital camcorders record directly to DVD which can immediately be viewed on your DVD player.

A BLOG
In today's world, many people are creating a blog containing different topics. A personal blog is a great way to share stories and pictures of your blog with your friends and your family. A personal blog can reflect a digital diary containing stories, pictures and music in the background.

A DIARY
Many people started already from childhood with a diary. They write almost every day a summary of their activities. Experiences, how they feel, making new friends, problems they have are items written in their diary. Also when they fall in love for the first time, when a relationship is broken, the day they decided to go marry and anything which keep up in their mind is mostly written in their diary. This diary preserves interesting information for the future to remember all what happened in your life. Is it not great to share this diary later with your children? A diary is a great way to preserve family memories.

JEWELRY OR OTHER BELONGINGS
When someone of your family members died you want to have some personal belongings of this personal, especially if this happened to one of your parents or grandparents. I remember when my grandfather died that my grandmother asked me if I would to wear his golden ring. Now, almost thirty years later; I still wear this ring and it is one of the most valuable belongings I have. It is not necessarily a jewel to have as memory; it is just to matter to have something that reminds your important family member. Another example is a small box in wood that I preserve as one of my most valuable belongings of my father who died twenty years ago. This box contains some papers with written text of him. This box has for strangers no value but for me it is one of my most valuable belongings and I never will lose.

There is plenty of choice for preserving family memories. Teach your children the importance of these memories. Pictures, a diary, a book of their grandparents, a poem, a Christmas card, toys or anything you can collect of your family members can be a cherished possession they like to share with the children they will have in the future or other people they like.
