The most important thing to do to prevent flaky skin is to follow your doctor's hygiene instructions. Since newborns have such delicate skin, it is important for parents to follow doctor's recommendations carefully. Parents are given care instructions when they leave the hospital with their precious bundle of joy. The instructions give hygiene information and should be followed so baby's skin does not dry out.
Never wash your baby in harsh soaps. Harsh soaps will strip natural oils from your baby's skin. Thus, baby's skin will dry out and flake.
Babies do not need a bath everyday. Water dries out babies' skin, too. If you want to prevent flaking on your baby's skin, you will want to make sure you do not dry out your baby's skin by over-cleaning. When I was a new mother, I thought I should wash my baby down everyday. The doctor told me to stop because her skin would dry out.
Use only baby products on your baby's skin as he or she grows. Baby products are designed for delicate and sensitive skin. If you want to prevent a baby's skin from flaking and drying out, you should always use products specifically designed for a baby.
Baby products are sometimes more expensive than products that are designed for sensitive skin, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Buying inexpensive products that are not designed for babies could cause your baby's skin to flake. I used several bubble baths that were not meant for babies and they caused my daughter's skin to dry out. I was lucky to find one that actually worked for her.
A good prevention and treatment for a baby's skin flaking is to use moisturizers. Most baby washes have moisturizers in their formula. You can also buy baby lotion and baby oils separately from the baby wash.
The next most important thing to do to prevent your newborn's skin from flaking is to continuously use the same products on your baby. Whatever products you are using, if they do not irritate baby's skin, you should stick with them and try to keep using the same brands. For example, continue to use the same brand of diapers, baby wash and laundry detergent. If you change brands, the new products may irritate baby's delicate skin.
If you cannot prevent your baby's skin from flaking, it is important that you treat the flaking skin. If a baby's skin does flake, it is best to take the infant to a pediatrician for treatment recommendations.
