Practical Tips on Preventing Blisters

Blisters are painful and can hurt for days. Especially if you are on your feet a lot. There are home remedies to treat blisters but if you can prevent them in the first place you will be better off. Here are some practical ways to prevent blisters on the feet.

Tips on Preventing Blisters: Buy Shoes Later in the Day

You want to buy shoes when your feet are swelled up from walking because then you will buy a good pair that is at least half a shoe size bigger than your normal size. If you are on your feet all day then wait until after work in the afternoon to buy your shoes. This way, you will prevent blisters from forming since the shoe will fit better and feel more comfortable. Also wear the same kind of socks when you try the shoes on that you are going to wear with the shoes.

Tips on Preventing Blisters: Try Leather

Leather shoes have microscopic pores that allow air to circulate, therefore letting the feet breath. Instead of vinyl and plastic shoes, try leather instead. If your feet are drier, blisters are less likely to form.

Tips on Preventing Blisters: Break in New Shoes

Your shoes should fit good when you try them on but they may be a bit tight due to being new. You will want to wear them all the time but in order to prevent a blister it is best to break them in gradually so your feet can get used to them.

Tips on Preventing Blisters: Exercise When it's Cooler

If you exercise regularly, try not to exercise during the middle of the day when it is hotter outside, especially during the Summer. Try exercising in the morning or evening when it is cooler out to prevent your feet from perspiring and blistering.

Tips on Preventing Blisters: Keep Your Shoes Dry

Never wear wet shoes. If your shoes are wet from perspiration or just wet from water, a blister can form from there being more dragging between your feet and shoes. If you are a runner, try having two pair of running shoes. One for the first run of the day and the other for the second run of the day.

Tips on Preventing Blisters: Protect Hot Spots

If you have hot spots where blisters form easily, protect them with some petroleum jelly and socks. You can also use adhesive foam or felt pads to protect your feet from chronic hot spots. For best results with the adhesive foam or felt pads, make sure they cover the entire area of the foot instead of just the area where blisters usually form because the rest of the foot can become irritated also.

Tips on Preventing Blisters: Wear Special Socks

Specially made sport socks can help prevent blisters from forming especially if you are more prone to them. Cotton and wool can keep the feet dry by absorbing any moisture. Acrylic fibers may be better than cotton or wool because they move moisture away from the feet and keep them drier and less prone to form blisters. Try them both for best results.

Tips on Preventing Blisters: Foot Powder

If all else fails and you need something to help you prevent blisters from forming, try sprinkling on some foot powder to keep your feet dry and prevent blisters. Anything you can do to prevent a blister is better than getting one and having to deal with the pain.
