How to Prevent Childhood Obesity

Lee Andrew Henderson
The rate of obesity in the United States has been increasing for years. The number one reason for the increase in obesity is because many Americans are obese at a very young age. Childhood obesity is a huge occurrence now when it wasn't very prevalent twenty years ago. There are a few easy steps that can be taken to avoid childhood obesity.

Obviously the easiest way to prevent childhood obesity is to monitor a child's food and make sure they eat correctly. Children should be able to enjoy their young years so don't go too crazy. Children should be able to enjoy hot dogs, mac and cheese and ice cream every once in a while. Just make sure it's not too often and make sure they also eat plenty of vegetables, fruits and other healthy foods.

It's not enough to just feed a child healthy food, but also teach them what is healthy and why they should eat healthy food. Children are smarter than many give them credit for. If a child is taught that healthy food will make them grow to be big and strong then they are more likely to eat it. The child might not eat all their vegetables when asked but it is more likely they can be convinced.

In addition to monitoring what a child eats it is also important to monitor a child's television and video games. There is a reason the popular phrase is "couch potato". Not only do activities like watching television and playing video games promote sitting around but these are also activities that normally involve eating snacks.

Anybody that has tried to lose a few pounds knows that it is not enough just to eat correctly. For a child to avoid childhood obesity it is important to promote physical activities. Another reason to monitor a child's video game and television habits is to make sure they balance it out with exercise. For every time a child watches a television program or plays a video game make sure they also spend an equal amount of time outside. Another solution is to find an activity a child likes (soccer, karate, dance, etc.) and enroll them in a league or sign them up for lessons.
