Step 1: Make sure that you are using the right grout for the job. A wall grout, commonly used with ceramic wall tiles, is made to only span about 1/8 inch. Try to span a larger distance and the grout will crack. If you have wider grout lines, use a sanded grout, which is normally used for flooring. This type of grout will span whatever distance you require.
Step 2: Examine the grout once you have it home. You should only purchase grout that has been properly sealed against moisture. If the grout has lumps in it, you should return the grout. Another option is to sift out any hard lumps with a metal sieve.
Step 3: Carefully measure the powdered grout and place it in a tub for mixing. Measuring by weight is often most accurate, but you can measure by volume in a pinch. Consult the manufacturer's instructions for instructions.
TIP: Only mix enough grout that you can easily use within 30 minutes. For large projects, you should plan on mixing the grout as you need it.
Step 4: Add water to the powdered grout according to the manufacturer's suggested ratios. Be sure to carefully measure the water using the same method you used to measure the powdered grout. Then carefully mix the two together until the powder is properly hydrated.
TIP: Press some of the grout into a ball, it is holds it's shape easily, it's the right consistency.
Step 5: When cleaning grout haze from the surface of the applied grout, be sure to use a sponge that is only slightly damp. Adding excess water during this step is an easy way to create cracks.
