As lovable as dogs are, they can sometimes be unpredictable when it comes to their behavior. You might think you have the perfect dog but then suddenly he bites another dog or a human for no apparent reason. There are things, however, you can do to prevent your dog from biting; and these tips will not just help your dog, but you as well since your dog will have to be reported and isolated/quarantined if he bites someone. You can be sued and in some cases, your dog might even be euthanized; so follow the tips below to ensure that does not happen.
- Train your dog as soon as possible. This is a great way for your dog to socialize and learn new skills at the same time. When taking your dog to training sessions make sure the entire family is involved so everyone understands the proper techniques.
- Do not play aggressive games with your dog like tug-of-war.
- Socialize your dog by introducing him to a variety of different people and situations. Note: Always keep your dog on a leash during this process.
- Neuter or spay your dog as this will reduce your dog's desire to roam and fight.
- Do not allow your dog to roam as this can be dangerous to other dogs and humans.
- Vaccinate your dog, particularly against rabies.
- Do not tolerate aggressive behavior such as growling, nipping or biting.
- If you do not know how your dog will react to another dog, person or situation, be cautious; hold his leash and keep him close to you.
- Avoid situations that your dog perceives to be stressful until he has completed his training and is comfortable.
- If you know your dog is aggressive towards certain people (e.g. visitors), place him in a separate room. Eventually with proper training your dog should be able to handle those same visitors.
