How to Prevent Getting Fatigue From the Food You Eat

Heide Lynne Canlas
Feeling tired at the end of the day or after strenuous physical or mental activity is typical and should be expected. However, a constant and persistent feeling of exhaustion and weakness despite getting adequate rest, sleep, and relaxation, or feeling excessively tired despite an easy activity could already be a symptom of an ailment. Thus, changes in his lifestyle and diet should be introduced.

Persistent fatigue can result from intake of the wrong kinds of food. Malnourishment, anemia, eating disorders, low blood sugar levels, and obesity can cause fatigue. It is necessary to make adjustments in one's daily diet in order to avoid experiencing persistent fatigue.

A person suffering from such type of fatigue should consume foods rich in Vitamin E including nuts, seeds, broccoli, sunflower, olive, fish, and vegetable oils; Vitamin B such as fish, meat, berries, and milk; and Vitamin C like fresh citrus fruits, berries and tomatoes, green leafy vegetables, and fruit juices as these nutrients help sustain our body for physical and mental activity.

Also necessary in the prevention and treatment of fatigue are minerals such as iron which is often found in meat, fish, and green leafy vegetables; potassium which is found in nuts, banana, and green leafy vegetables; and magnesium which is found in nuts, whole grains, legumes, and green leafy vegetables.

Fatigue caused by a sudden and extreme drop in blood sugar levels can be avoided by steering clear of processed carbohydrates often found in junk food, food containing white flour or processed sugar, and caffeine which could trigger the excessive production of insulin that would result to an abnormally low blood sugar level.

Processed carbohydrates and caffeine can give our body a temporary energy boost by increasing our blood sugar levels. However, this rush of blood sugar often triggers an over-reaction from the pancreas which, in turn, produces too much insulin, resulting to an abrupt drop in blood sugar levels. This sudden and steep drop results to weakness, vertigo, and fatigue.

We can avoid fatigue by watching what we eat. Proper nourishment is the key to a healthy and active lifestyle.
