How to Prevent Hair Breakage and Maintain Healthier Hair

Dee Davis
Hair loss or hair breakage can be a traumatic experience. Now, why wouldn't it be? Hair is the essence of a woman's beauty and an important part of a man's (good looks) appearance and a source of pride.

The average person looses approximately anywhere from 50 to 200 strands daily. However, when you have mild to severe hair breakage, you are loosing far more hair. There are a number of things which can caused severe breakage and those include; the use of the wrong kind of shampoo, hormonal changes due to pregnancy (this effects every woman differently) and of course one of the most common; chemically treated hair. A healthy head of hair can be a reflection of good diet and a healthy lifestyle and the reverse is true. Below are a few home remedies that have worked for me and I hope that you will have the same results.

THINGS YOU'LL NEED:

-(2-3) small bowls (varies depending on the home remedy)

-extra virgin olive oil

-a whisk a fork a tablespoon

-a wide toothed comb

-avocado

-2 eggs

Step 1: The first step to reducing hair breakage is to cut down on the amount of chemical products used in your hair.

Step 2: Reduce the use of the blow dryer and towel blot or dry the hair instead. In addition, substitute hair rollers instead of using curling irons.

Step 3: Use a brush with soft bristles or natural horse hair, which does not stress or tear the hair.

Step 4: Use a wide toothed comb.

Step 5: The first home remedy is a hot oil treatment. This treatment is great for many things, however is perfect for hair breakage. Pour 5 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil to a bowl and warm it in the microwave for 20 to 25 seconds (the amount of olive oil used will vary depending on the hair length).

Instead of the microwave one can halve a bowl/pan with hot water and place the bowl of olive oil in it for 10 to 15 minutes. Do not over heat the oil; you only need to warm it up.

Step 6: Now apply the olive oil throughout the hair and scalp. Then massage it into the hair.

Step 7: Cover the hair with a plastic shower cap and leave it on for approximately an hour. If you are able, invest in a satin lined shower cap for a better result.

Step 8: After about an hour shampoo hair. Then apply a moisturizing conditioner to hair. Repeat steps 5 to 8 every 3 to 5 days, consistently for about a month. However, if there are no changes, please see a health care professional or family physician.

Step 9: The second home remedy is my mom's hair mayonnaise recipe. The first step is to combine and whisk two egg yolks in a small bowl.

Step 10: Now, cut an avocado into two halves. Remove the skin of one half and put it in a separate bowl. Then use a fork to mash the avocado.

Step 11: Add 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil to avocado and whisk olive oil and avocado together until they are one texture.

Step 12: Then add the yolk to the avocado and olive oil blend; continue whisking until they are one composition.

Step 13: Now apply throughout the hair, however concentrate on the areas that need it most (like the ends or hair in back of the head).

Step 14: Leave in hair for about a half hour and then shampoo and condition hair as usual.

Step 15: Repeat steps 9 to 14 every 3 days or weekly until there is an improvement in the overall condition of the hair. You should be able to see results after about 2 to 3 weeks. If not, please consult a health care professional or family physician.

Moreover, I have done some foot work and have found that home remedies are great options and do work perfectly fine. However, if the hair is severely damaged then it's important to find products that requires fewer steps and gives immediate results or consult with a physician. For best results, do a leave-in-treatment and follow the instructions on the label. More importantly, read the ingredients on the label before purchasing the product to reduce the possibility of putting a product in your hair that could be damaging to the hair or increase the rate of hair breakage.

QUICK TIPS

1. Do not use alcohol based products, because they will dry out the hair.

2. Massage scalp to stimulate the roots of the hair and to keep the blood flow to the scalp.

3. Clip at least 1/8th of an inch every month, to keep the hair looking fresh (and to remove damaged hair).

4. Increase your vitamin E intake by eating green leafy vegetables like broccoli, spinach and so on. Moreover, nuts and fortified cereals are a great source of vitamin E. I was informed by my doctor years ago that vitamin E will improve the overall condition of the hair.

5. Always use the same brand of products on the hair.

6. If you are allergic to any of the products above, please do not use the guidelines given; instead consult your physician.
