How to Prevent Hemorrhoids

Bev Cohen
Hemorrhoids are a painful condition where the veins in the rectal canal swell and get red, usually caused by straining from constipation. Veins that swell inside the anal canal are called internal hemorrhoids. Veins that swell near the opening of the anus are called external hemorrhoids. Even though this can be an embarrassing condition, the good news is that hemorrhoids are not usually serious. There are treatments for hemorrhoids such as topical creams and surgery. The problem is that these methods don't prevent hemorrhoids from returning. But there are steps you can take to help prevent hemorrhoids. You know what they say - prevention is the best medicine!

Fiber: Fiber is essential for normal bowel movements, thus eliminating straining. Fiber helps your intestines to quickly move food through the intestines and form soft stools. Processed foods lack the required fiber. Fiber-filled hemorrhoid prevention foods should include fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads, whole grain cereals, leafy green, beans, brown rice, bran and nuts, which are all high in fiber.

Fluids: "Hydrating" fluids is the key here. Adults should drink 8 to 10 glasses of water per day. Coffee, tea, and alcohol do not fall into the "hydrating" fluids category. They actually create mild dehydration which is exactly the opposite of what is needed for prevention of hemorrhoids.

Exercise: Moderate exercise, about 30 minutes a day, helps regulate the digestive system. Any exercise that increases the heart rate, such as walking or bike riding, is all that is needed.

Foods to avoid: Spicy foods should be avoided as they irritate the digestive tract. And foods that cause constipation such as white bread, white rice, cheese, and processed foods, are not wise diet choices.

Preventing hemorrhoids takes a little effort, but anything that helps us live a healthier and more pain-free life is worth trying. And not having to deal with hemorrhoids is certainly a step in that direction.
