Job stress can negatively impact anyone's work performance, which is bad for any business. To help understand how job stress can impact work performance and what you can do to prevent job stress from impacting work performance, I have interviewed psychotherapist Jay White.
Tell me a little bit about yourself.
" I have a private practice in Mount Pleasant, SC. I studied undergrad at Wofford College in SC and got my Masters at the University of Houston at Clear Lake . I have been working with individuals, couples and families in private practice for about 10 years for a myriad of reasons including, but not limited to, stress, depression, anxiety and adjustment issues."
How can job stress impact work performance?
"Job stress may be the number one thing that impacts work performance. You never hear anyone say 'I have the perfect amount of work everyday.' We either have too little or too much, and then the added pressures from co-workers, bosses, customers and suppliers. Work performance is affected when stressed, which is the brain telling you that you may not or cannot get things done."
How can someone prevent job stress from impacting work performance ?
"To prevent this you simply have to be realistic with yourself and others about what will get done and what quality to expect. Also, know that in your work environment there are some good things about what you may consider shortcomings. For example, if you are a teacher there is no way you will teach a classroom of 25 students as much as you could teach one child alone. However, there are important lessons being learned socially as how to get along in a group, how to wait your turn, etc. Also, though people may make your day more difficult, it is unlikely they are trying to make your day harder on purpose. Simply talk to them and ask if they can help you out by doing x, y, or z. If they refuse or do something different, at least they are now out of the way. For example, when my kids are at each other and are constantly saying 'Dad, he did this' or 'she said this' I ask them to either get along or help me with yard work. When given the choice of helping or being quiet I win either way."
What type of professional help is available for someone that is having a difficult time preventing job stress from impacting their work performance?
"Call a counselor or pick up a good self-help book on stress. Talking to someone who is trained and unbiased is a great way to make a lot of mileage quickly. Taking care of your self is important, especially if it is something that is not going away on it's own."
Thank you Jay for doing the interview on how on to prevent job stress from impacting work performance. For more information Jay White or his work you can check out his website on www.charlestontherapy.com.
