How to Prevent Nausea During Your Flight

Sophie Spyrou

Flying remains a convenient form of travel for many passengers, despite rising fuel costs and cutbacks in services for passengers that were once complimentary. But one of the drawbacks of flying is dealing with feelings of nausea. What can you do to prevent nausea during your flight?

Control Air Sickness

If you are prone to air sickness, you should take steps to control your symptoms before they develop. Make an appointment to see your doctor before you travel to discuss your health care needs and how best to manage your symptoms without causing too much disruption to your travel plans. Once you have control of the air sickness, you will not have to worry about embarrassing visits to the toilet or having to make do with vomiting into a sick bag with the eyes of other passengers on you.

Nausea can occur for a number of reasons while you are flying, from the effects of air sickness, to simply skipping a meal. But if you take steps to prevent nausea, you can sit back and enjoy a more pleasant flight, without worrying about having to use a sick bag on board the plane.

Stay Hydrated

Changes in air pressure can cause changes in the way you feel physically, ranging from mild discomfort to feelings of nausea. Some passengers make the mistake of filling up on caffeinated drinks such as tea or coffee, or they drink alcoholic beverages. The best drink you can have on board a plane is plain water.

Once you have passed through airport security, you are at liberty to fill up an empty water bottle from a water fountain or to buy a bottle of water while you are waiting for your flight. Drink plenty of water while you are waiting in the departure lounge and take advantage of complimentary drinks by always asking flight attendants for water, rather than a drink that will dehydrate you.

Eat Little and Often

When you are feeling nauseous, you are unlikely to want to eat. But it is important to try to eat little and often, to help overcome the feelings of nausea and help make your flight less of an ordeal.

Pack light snacks with you to eat on board the plane. If you are taking a long haul flight, you will receive meals. Take your time and eat slowly so that you are not sick. There is no rush to be finished in 5 minutes. If you cannot finish what is in front of you, stop eating when you feel full and save the leftovers for a snack later on when your stomach has settled.

Nausea can occur for a number of reasons while you are flying, from the effects of air sickness, to simply skipping a meal. But if you take preventative steps to prevent nausea, you can sit back and enjoy a more pleasant flight, without worrying about the embarrassing consequences of being sick on board the plane.
