How to Prevent Osteoporosis Disease

Wendy Rahilly
Osteoporosis disease is a condition in which the bones gradually deteriorate. It causes the bones to become so week that the slightest fall can cause them to snap and break or fracture. People who have osteoporosis disease can break a bone by doing such simple tasks as bending down or picking up a small appliance. Osteoporosis develops when a person does not have sufficient quantities of calcium on their body. This causes the bones to become very fragile.

The fractures that can occur due to osteoporosis typically occur on the hip, wrist, or spine. Women are more susceptible to osteoporosis, but men can also develop this condition.

The best way to prevent osteoporosis disease is to take care of your bones. Even though bone loss often begins in early adulthood, it's never too late to work towards keeping the bones healthy and strong.

Early bone loss often does not have symptoms. But as osteoporosis disease progresses, and the bones begin to deteriorate, a person may have a slumped over posture, a reduction in height, and back pain due to fractures in the vertebrae.

There are some steps you can take to reduce your chances of developing osteoporosis. Be sure to get enough vitamin D. This can dramatically cut your risk. For people who already have osteoporosis, taking vitamin D can prevent further deterioration of the bones. In some cases taking vitamin D can even help a person regain lost bone.

Another way to prevent osteoporosis disease is to get adequate amounts of calcium. The daily requirement for calcium depends on a person's age. Children and teenagers need calcium the most because their bones are still developing. Pregnant women and nursing mothers also need more calcium. Older people have a harder time absorbing calcium. Your doctor can tell you what your proper dosage of calcium should be.

You can get calcium from milk and other dairy products. But it's also important to eat foods that are rich in calcium. This includes vegetables such as kale, almonds, rice, beans, and soy products. Soy contains plant estrogens, which can help keep the bones dense and prevent fractures.

Exercise also keeps the bones strong. People of all ages can benefit from regular exercise. But the younger you are when you start, the better. Do a combination of aerobics and resistance exercises. You can also include strength training exercises, which will help build bones, as well as muscles and bones and prevent your chances of getting osteoporosis disease.
