It can be very difficult, if not impossible, to stick to your diet. You are determined to stay on the straight and narrow, then someone asks you out to dinner, or there is a party to attend, and all your hard work is gone. It is very easy to slide back into old habits once that happens.

There are a several things you can do to prevent this scenario. Here are a few ideas to help you prevent over-eating and stick to your diet.

1. First, don't try to skip meals so you can "make up" for them later. If you keep to your regular schedule, you won't be as hungry so you won't want to over-eat. Skipping meals is one of the worst mistakes people make when trying to lose weight. Your body goes into "starvation mode" and starts craving food. If you keep your food intake on a regular schedule, your body won't be demanding food when you don't need it.

2. Drink lots of water. Staying hydrated is very important, and water helps you feel full. You can also drink fruit juices, which have the added benefit of vitamins and minerals. In the summer, watermelons and cantaloupes are great sources of fluids, vitamins and minerals. They have no saturated fat and very few calories.

3. It's easy to get stressed-out in the multi-tasking workplaces of today's business environments. Even those who run a business from home can be over-taxed and stressed. Raising children is demanding as is running a household. Too many people sacrifice a good night's sleep in order to keep up with the demands of the day. Getting enough sleep is essential for your body to rebuild and recuperate. The less sleep you get, the less energy you will have. This can lead to you using foods full of sugar or carbohydrates for energy during the day. Not only will you not lose weight, there is a good chance you will gain more. Treat yourself well by planning enough down-time and getting the proper amount of sleep.

4. Start every day with a good breakfast. This will give your body the energy it needs for the day ahead. It also helps brain function and reduces the food cravings that can cause you to eat high-calorie snacks in order to stop feeling hungry. A good breakfast doesn't have to be fancy or time consuming. A bowl of oatmeal with some fruit or brown sugar will do just fine. Whole-grain cereal with skim or low-fat milk and a glass of juice will start you day off right. Try adding some fresh berries to low-fat yogurt. If you have a blender, there are plenty of healthy smoothie recipes on the web.

5. Sticking to your diet and not over-eating is possible. You just need a little planning and some will-power. Before you know it, all those old bad habits will disappear, and you'll be feeling and looking great!
