How to Prevent Prostate Problems and Recognizing Enlarged Prostate Symptoms

Enlarged prostate symptoms can be really unpleasant. It is important that we do all we can to prevent prostate problems from occurring in the first place

I turned forty last year and realize that it is now the time to think seriously about ways to prevent prostate problems and other health problems from arising. I have spent enough time around hospitals to know that once men get older the prostate can be the source of many problems. I have seen how dealing with enlarged prostate symptoms can be debilitating and that prostate cancer is on the rise. I want to do all I can to prevent prostate problems developing.

What is the prostate?

Many medical sources describe the prostate as being about the same size of a walnut and it can be found around a man's urethra under the bladder. The function of this small organ is to produce an alkaline substance that allows sperm to survive in a woman's vagina.

What causes prostate problems?

Prostate problems can be caused by a bacterial infection, an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer. As men get older their prostate can keep on growing and it can eventually begin pressing down on the urethra. This will prevent urine from passing smoothly. Eventually enlarged prostate symptoms get so bad that surgery is required.

How to recognize enlarged prostate symptoms?

- Stopping and starting when you are passing urine

- Frequent visits to the toilet during the night

- Only passing small amounts of urine

- Blood in the urine

- Feeling like you haven't finished

- Leaking small amounts of urine

If you have these symptoms you should definitely go see your doctor

How to prevent prostate problems

- Don't smoke. There is some research that suggests that smoking will increase your risk of developing this type of problem.

- Have regular sex or masturbate. It is suggested that this is like a workout for your prostate and it will keep things functioning.

- Eat plenty of tomatoes. There is evidence that this reduces your risk of prostate cancer and other prostate related problems; apparently this is due to the fact that they are a good source of lycopene.

- Exercise and eat a healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables.

It makes sense that we should do all we can to prevent prostate problems occurring in the first place. Sometimes despite our best efforts we still develop problems though. If you notice any enlarged prostate symptoms make sure you get checked by your doctor straight away.
