A Fish a Day May Keep a Stroke Away

The devastation a stroke can cause is terrible for the one who has suffered the stroke and also for their family and friends since the physical damage is so evident. The cognitive damage may or may not be subtle.It can be anywhere from forgetfulness to inability to recognize loved ones.

Nursing homes are filled with stroke victims. You see them lined up along the wall in wheel chairs or in the dining rooms trying to swallow down pureed food. Some are unable to even speak.

A stroke is sometimes called a brain attack. Strokes occur when 1. A blood clot blocks the flow of blood to the brain. 2. When a blood vessel in the brain ruptures.

The symptoms of a stroke are a sudden severe headache, dizziness, mental confusion, weakness on one side of the body and difficulty speaking. If you experience any of these symptoms it is imperative that you get medical help immediately. Any delay can mean serious disability or death.

Stroke prevention is important since stroke is the third leading cause of death in the U.S.According to the American Medical Association. There are several things we can do to help prevent this killer attack from happening to us. First reduce your stress level. second keep your blood pressure at a healthy level. Your doctor can help you with this. Get rid of those extra pounds. It will substantially reduce your risk. Exercise to improve your circulation. Eat healthy and include plenty of fish in your diet, A study listed in The Journal of the American Medical Association concludes that the more fish we eat the better chance we have of living stroke free. It is due to the Omega 3 that is plentiful in fish. Eating flaxseed,walnuts,and dark leafy greens such as Kale, spinach, collards and Swiss chard not only assist in stroke prevention, but also guard against skin problems, depression and immune system imbalances. And last but not least,If you smoke stop. ask your doctor to help or look into community programs to assist in stopping the butt habit.

Balance your life to stay healthy and get regular checkups so your doctor can keep on top of any health issues that may crop up. This is not only important in stroke prevention but for your continued over all good health.
